Othering is defined as “not one of us” but then who are the us? It is human nature to identify someone that doesn’t look like you or have different heritage to label them as the “other.” Since birth you are surrounded by people like your family who look like you and are used to viewing them as “the norm” now becoming impossible to view yourself as the other as your perception is biased. As someone who has immigrated from India to America and do not look what people from India would look like I become the “other” and many questions are asked about how I ended up in India, if I was discriminated why I don’t look Indian and etc. I am a Tibetan refugee who was born and raised in India. India is my home and I never felt the need to explain what

The way I would describe othering is referring to people as ‘they’ or ‘them’ meaning outside, rather than ‘we’ or ‘us’ which is more inclusive and says a group as a whole. This could also mean that othering is similar to discrimination or racism. There has been a lot that has changed about othering,…

People may criticize you just because you don’t look like the nationality you are, or they speak with an accent. I was born and raised in the United States but people think I am Indian or Dominican because of my complexion and the way I talk. I feel like that is discrimination because they are judging before actually knowing me and guessing my nationality and culture before asking me. I feel like the “other” because people expect to put Hispanic on applications instead of American and because people come up to me speaking in Spanish assuming that I know what they are saying.…

My family is oriented by the Indian culture and lifestyle. In India, Kerala (my home State), is the first State to achieve 100% literacy. It is known for its natural beauty and nicknamed as God’s own country. India has a population of 1.18 billion (April 2010 Estimate) and 29 main languages. Life in my birth country (India) is fascinating as people from various different communities, ethnic and language groups, and religious traditions live together in unity. Indian population is polygenetic and is an amazing amalgamation of various races and cultures. Defined as other or othering a term used to categorise people seen as underserving eg the poor, single mothers and some migrant groups. “This social devaluation is an important dimension of social injustice and it compounds inequalities of material resources and infringes human and citizenship rights leading to problems being defined, diagnosed and policies developed and targeted at them to ‘cure’ them” (Young, 2008,page 124 ).…

The act of making a claim of superiority without taking these angles into consideration makes our arguments, claims, groups, etc., unfounded and irrelevant. 2. The argument that anyone whom has been judged or looked down upon could be considered the Other is a difficult one to claim. Every aspect that goes into being considered “the other” are as varied as they are complex. While this aspect certainly could be one of the requirements to qualify, to me there is one glaring dynamic in common and that is “Point of View.”…

Whether it’s watching a documentary on how the Great Wall of China was built, or eating escargot at the local French restaurant, learning more about other cultures is something that interests me. This melding of cultures has allowed me to experience the best of both worlds—a sophisticated and diverse American life blended along with the traditional culture and colorful customs of my Indian heritage. With my parents’ increasing support of my interest to learn more about and visit the land of my ancestors, we decided to travel to India a couple of summers ago.…

We were all once children, and even till now our parents might still think of us as children. But the difference is that we are all in this class room learning and trying to boost our education for the future while most of our parents are at work paying for this schooling. So if we are here at this age where were we while we were children and our parents were at work. CHILDCARE. Childcare refers to the care and education offered to children aged 0-6 in a long day care environment. I remember about this time last year we were enrolling my cousin, Angela aged 3, in Playdays. Playdays have 200 children enrolled per week, however they are only allowed to accommodate for no more than 49 children per day.…

Otherness is the process when a group of people single out another person or a group of people based on their perceived differences from them. The singled out group or person (the “others”) could be different because of their sex, skin color, religion or anything else that is different from the people who are doing the “othering.” However, being different doesn’t necessarily mean you are being othered. Othering occurs when you are teased, belittled, or otherwise rejected from general society because of your differences.…

Introduction This past year, I was blessed with having a roommate who traveled all the way from Hyderabad, India to our home, Boston, Massachusetts. Before meeting her, I was very narrow minded when thinking about India. From the way our society portrays India, I thought it only consisted of small street stores, dirt roads, and auto rickshaws. Through real life stories and research, my thought of India has changed completely. Social Structure…
