It was the last half and the score was 0-0. I was very tired from running, but I had the opportunity to take the ball to the goal and I wasn’t going to miss my chance. This relates to the Odyssey when Odysseus got trapped in the cave by the cyclops. He didn’t think he would be able to escape, but was able to after creating a plan to escape. He blinded the cyclops and escaped by holding onto the bottom of a giant sheep. Odysseus and I were both able to overcome

As William Makepeace Thackeray once said, "bravery never goes out of fashion." This theme is evident both in modern day life and ancient literature. As America found out this past August, men will go to all ends to prove their masculinity. William Lawson, of Louisiana, is among the more recent examples of this. Years after leaving the Marine Corps as a grunt, without fighting experience, he masqueraded as a Marine Corps General. His deception lasted for decades before his story unraveled. Similarly, men throughout time have come up with ways of cloaking their foolishness with a deep blanket of machoism. Such is the tale of Odysseus, of Homer's Odyssey. As Book Nine of the Odyssey reveals, Odysseus' tactful nature belies the many mistakes he makes.…

Within Books IX-XII of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey,” the main character, King Odysseus of Ithaca, describes his life following the Trojan War. After leaving Troy victorious, Odysseus cannot return to Greece quickly because Poseidon, God of the Sea, promises to make Odysseus suffer, preventing a speedy trip home. Following a decade of adventure and woe, Odysseus narrates his experience to King Alcinous of the Phaecians, as a guest in Alcinous’ palace. As Odysseus explains the previous ten years in extensive detail, he reveals a variety of encounters with peculiar lands and strange people, including a handful of Gods. Most notably, Odysseus and his men sail to a seemingly uninhabited and wild island, only to become prisoners of a Cyclops named Polyphemus. In order to escape, Odysseus must blind Polyphemus. Unfortunately for Odysseus, Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, and this violence against the family of Poseidon further compromises Odysseus’ ability to return.…

Horace was one of the many few who saw the clay and the diversity between every individual. The main cause for this wide diversity is adversity; adversity has a way of fabricating character and talents into every person. Through every anguish, our clay…
