The process of ‘coming of age’ is individual to everyone.
This quote is implying/means that although everybody goes through similar coming of age experiences, such as; relationships, peer pressure and maturity, they react differently which gives them their own identity. Relationships are an important coming of age experience in the novel ‘Touch Me’ by James Moloney and the film ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’ directed by Gil Junger.
Relationships are interactions between two or more people, this includes family relationships, friends, intimate relationships and acquaintances.
In the novel, Xavier Mclachlan develops an intimate relationship with Nuala Magee. In his initial relationship with Nuala, he is attracted to her because …show more content…
she is different, dangerous and beautiful. On their first date, Nuala takes her time to trust Xave and to get close to him as she has had bad experiences with boys before.
In the movie, Katerina (like Nuala) is also different and dangerous, and meets a guy named Patrick and they form an intimate relationship together.
Kat, in the past has also had experience with a bad relationship and has learned from it. This shows that Kat and Nuala have already been involved with a coming of age experience.
Xave shows his immaturity when he listens to gossip and rumours about Nuala, that she has ‘slept around’ and that she is pregnant while going out with Xave.
Xave shows a lack of understanding when he and Nuala are at the formal hire shop. As he does not understand what Nuala has been through, Xave is not aware of the delicate situation and does not handle it very well. However, he does develop a mature self awareness when he goes back to the dress shop to buy Nuala the blue dress after they have broken up.
Like Xave, Patrick does not understand what Katerina has been through, and does not realise why she is different. Katerina’s father has a house rule, that Kat’s younger sister is only allowed to date if Kat dates, so Patrick is payed by a classmate to go out with Kat so he can date Bianca. In the end scene of the movie, Pat realises that it was wrong to go out with Kat for money, and that he really, truly likes her. This realisation that Pat has, shows that he has matured and goes through a coming of age
experience.
Xavier and Nuala’s relationship had a positive impact in Xave, as he matured, he is responsible and creates his own identity. Patrick and Katerina’s relationship is very similar to Xave and Nuala’s, and they too mature and find their own identities through this coming of age experience.
Some language techniques found in ‘Touch Me’, referring to coming of age experiences explored by Xave and Nuala include; direct speech, slang, dialogue and rhetorical question. The use of slang is found in both texts to relate to teenagers, such as swearing at one another, the word ‘dyke’ is used in the novel to convey disapproval of Xave’s friends.
Film techniques shown in the movie are; close up shots, expressing the frustration of Patricks face. Zooming in from the outside of Kats house, to inside the house. Different styles of music are played, like happy and fast music when Patrick and Katerina get back together from a break up, and hard rock music when we are first introduced to Pat.
In conclusion, I believe that that, although we all go through similar life experiences, we all individually experience them differently.
