In the book, Harper Lee shows the theme a need for compassion by using characterization. In the book she characterizes Atticus “It's not okay” He said “it's not okay to hate anyone” (page 282). The author mainly uses this characterization device to show the need for compassion through Atticus. In the book is in the same place “As Macomb County was a farm county, nickels and dimes were hard to come by for doctors and dentist and lawyers”. This is showing that the poor small setting nobody has very much money even the high paying jobs don't pay enough for people to have a secure source of money. Since everyone is poor people need to be compassionate because they have to help each other out because nobody can afford very much. If they all come together and work as one they can have compassion for each other and help. In the beginning of To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus was traded food for his services because they were not able to afford him with money so since he had compassion he allowed them to pay him in what they could which was food. Throughout the book you see ways people in Maycomb change things or let thing go because they feel bad or feel the need to help
