The idea of doublethink in the book 1984, is to make a lie seem like the truth to others and to yourself. You may know that what you are about to tell others is a lie, but you continue to tell them. But to make it seem like it is the honest truth first you have to tell yourself that it is the truth. I think that doublethink is very important to the Party’s control of Oceania because without it they would not be able to manipulate people. They are telling lies to the people in order to protect themselves and to prevent further questions from them.…

Occurrences such as the Two Minutes Hate, a ritual that the citizens of Oceania religiously take place in, are common in 1984. "The next moment a hideous, grinding, screech, as of some monstrous machine running without oil, burst from the big telescreen at the end of the room. It was a noise that set one's teeth on edge and bristled the hair at the back of one's neck. The Hate had started (14)". Orwell was not subtle when creating this "Hate". Starting at first impressions, with the name, Two Minutes Hate, symbolizing the corruption of life without trust, he foreshadowed for the readers what was to come. The opening of the Two Minutes Hate gives a peek into the horrid reality of Winston's world. With the first few words, "hideous, grinding, screech", Orwell gives the reader's senses a rude awakening. Then he treks on to give even more imagery, portraying, yet again the gloom. The description of a "monstrous machine running without oil" is a parallel to the way most citizens of Oceania's, including Winston, lives were running. The people are subconsciously forced to participate in all the acts of the Party. They are worked to death with no chance at any human comforts, such as expression. A machine without oil eventually breaks down, a foreshadowing of Winston's bleak and inevitable eventual break down to…
Imagine living in a world where politics are everything and all forms of individuality and personal identities are shattered. A world where everybody is stripped of their rights to talk, act, think, or even form their own opinions, simply because they do not agree with the government’s beliefs. These aspects are just a few of the examples of things dictators would have control over in a totalitarianism form of government. Aggressive leaders such as Hitler and Joseph Stalin are examples of such dictators. They used their power for terror and murder, and their motive is simply to maximize their own personal power. George Orwell had witnessed World War II, the fall of Hitler and Stalin’s dictatorships, and the fatal outcomes that have come from these governments. To warn future generations of the harsh effects of totalitarianism governments, he wrote the book Nineteen Eighty-Four. Published in 1946, Nineteen Eighty-Four describes life in a totalitarianism form of government, following the main character, Winston Smith, as he takes risks in discovering how he believes life should truly be. Literary critic Irving Howe states, “Were it possible, in the world of 1984, to show human character in anything resembling genuine freedom...it would not be the world of 1984” (62). In Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, the government uses its power to suppress individuality among the people.…
Like most minorities, the proles are the largest part of the population and thus the only way for change to occur in society. The proles, which are all non-party members, make up 85% of the population. They are forced to rely on the party for food and other basic necessities which makes them useless. However Winston believes that “If there is hope, it must lie in the proles” (Orwell 69). Winston believes if the proles could only realize their numbers, they could easily overthrow the party and bring it crumbling down.…
Doublethink is controlled insanity. The Party integrates the principles of doublethink into Oceania's citizen's daily lives as their primary method of brainwashing. Even the Inner Party members exercise doublethink regularly and it is unclear whether or not they believe their lies. Sanity is granted to those who learn, understand, and accept doublethink. Sanity is insanity and insanity is sanity. To be sane in Oceania you must become insane by unconsciously exercising doublethink this process must be understood and simultaneously forgotten, consequently it warps reality, and gives the Party internal control for eternity.…
Censorship and propaganda are both powerful tools used to manipulate citizens’ thoughts, actions, and feelings. Censorship is the deletion, blotting out, and editing of certain words and phrases in an effort to suppress the publics’ information. Propaganda can be described as advertising false or partially true information in an effort to win over certain peoples. The Party uses these two ideas as ways to brainwash its citizens.…

ehavior is confusing and backwards to The Savage, another main character, who has lived his life on the outskirts of a quite different society. Familial relationships are also incomprehensible to him, as he has an extremely close relationship with his mother. The result of total promiscuity within society is that sex becomes meaningless. It is an act that holds no other significance than fulfilling a need, similar to drinking and eating.…
A totalitarian government must be simultaneously admired and feared by its citizens in order to maintain absolute control. Oceania’s Inner Party in George Orwell’s 1984 takes extreme measures, such as putting its people through physical and mental torture, to ensure that they will always remain in power. Citizens are robbed of any personal rights and freedoms, bringing about their suffering and the Party’s success. Inequality between the social classes as well as unreasonable punishment for crime keeps the citizens in line and the Party in…
In this novel Nineteen Eighty-Four many people go against the higher powers that control them. The following paragraphs will show how the main characters, Winston and Julia show rebellion towards The Party and Big Brother, from committing crimes of showing faith in themselfs, to even believing in a organization called The Brother Hood that holds no real proof of existing, to even making bold decisions that could carry the two to death.…
Conformity is shown throughout 1984, where the society is filled with mindless followers. They follow the slogan which seems illogical and contradict each other. Also, the slogans have double meaning, that separates the people and the members of the party. The slogan are what the party represents to brainwash and promote nonsense to weaken the citizens independence and individual mind set. The government controls the thought and acts of the entire nation. Also, the eyes of big brother is always watching you, and is showing how they conform to society. It relates to today's world, where we are subconsciously being dragged by social norm and the changes around us. The lines “War is peace”, the governments keep the citizens enclosed to the…
1984 Essay John F. Kennedy once said,” conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth” a statement that still stands strong as conformity and oppression can seldom be found in today’s world. Together in this world the people choose their leaders and enjoy the right to overthrow any government they think of as corrupt. With such a heavy surge of information onto the general public, politicians can hide nothing forcing them into honesty. Also, the media is a massive help in the decision of our future leaders highlighting topics some might never have thought of; giving us the ability to pick and choose between topics we feel relevant. In terms of fear this world turning into dark, stale place; comparable to something like the dystopian…
