Research Design
In the Journal of Clinical Nursing’s article “Incidence and risk factors for pressure ulcers in the intensive care unit” a prospective, non-experimental, quantitative design is used. The design was suitable to verify the occurrence of pressure ulcers within 48 hours of admission and indentify possibilities for pressure ulcers grade 2-4 in a long-stay surgical Intensive Care Unit population. The target population included patients expected to reside for greater than twenty-four hours in an appropriate location of the surgical intensive care of the University Hospital Leuven, Belgium during November 27, 2003 through March 15, 2004. Eligibility consisted of dependent variable, which was the event of pressure ulcers grade 2-4. As well as, independent variables: demographic and clinical characteristics, potential prognostic variables and preventative measures. The Institutional Ethical Review Board waived the need for informed consent (Nijis, Toppets, Bearnaerts, Milisen, & Milisen, 2008, p. 1259). Thus the registered data was part of the nurse’s daily assessment. The documentation of the nurses and doctors were registered and utilized and in addition to the researcher’s confirmation of recorded data.
