An example that comes to my mind is the willful inaction of the German populous during World War II. Millions of Germans stood idly by as their fellow countrymen and women were systematically isolated, persecuted, and executed. The locations of the work and death camps were not unknown to the German people. How could they be? These facilities were huge complexes which required many workers and guards to operate. These places were not hidden, rather they were on the major rail lines throughout Nazi-controlled areas. Yet, most of the German People chose not to get involved.

To be culpable means “meriting condemnation or blame especially as wrong or harmful”. “Merriam-Webster, Culpable, n.d.) This word encapsulates the gross wrong committed by many majority groups. Individuals citizens are culpable to society’s injustice when they rationalization the reasons for mistreatment of others. They are culpable when they show negligent apathy to the plight of others. They are culpable when they willfully choose to not intervene on behalf of others.
Those who possess this culpable mentality often do not know of its existence. They have the privilege to ignore it. They have the opportunity to suppress their knowledge of it.
