The Fault in Our Stars, John Green, shows and reveals how Hazel powers through her depression. The Fault in Our Stars focuses on Hazel Grace and her battle with cancer. Hazel Grace preservers though her depression by accepting that conflict and change are an unavoidable part of life, realizing that conflict can cause change, and by adjusting to extreme change in her life.
Hazel Grace learns to cope with her depression by learning that change will happen in her life, when she meets Gus at support group, and they grow close as friends. “Look, let me just say it: He was hot” (Green 9). Hazel Grace’s life changes when she meets Gus and starts getting out of the house, she also learns that other people are going through the same struggle. Another section where Hazel shows that things will change is when “After a second, I said, ‘Wanna go to a movie?’” (Green 53), Hazel makes going out more of a priority once she meets Gus and accept that meeting him is changing her life for the better. Gus and Hazel meeting and going to AMsterdam also has negative impacts when “Augustus Waters died eight days after his prefuneral” (Green 261), Hazel wanting to be friends with Gus had a negative change, when he died from cancer because she lost her best friend and her boyfriend. Hazel persevered through her depression by growing close with Gus and having someone to do something with but she struggles when he dies.
