When Nick asks which Midwestern city he is from he says “San Francisco.” After seeing Nick’s skepticism, Gatsby shows him a medal from Montenegro and a picture of him playing cricket at Oxford. Gatsby’s car speeds through the valley of ashes. When a police officer pulls Gatsby over for speeding, he shows him a white card and the policeman apologizes for bothering him. In the city, Gatsby takes Nick to lunch where he introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem. Gatsby claim that Wolfshiem was responsible for fixing the 1919 World Series. When Nick tells him that he will help him. Gatsby also offers Nick the chance to make some money by joining him in some business on the side (not with Wolfshiem). Nick is slightly offended and declines the offer but still agrees to invite Daisy to his house. It rains on the day of the meeting, and Gatsby becomes nervous. He sends someone over to cut the grass and bring flowers. He’s worried that Daisy won’t be the same towards him like in Louisville. Daisy arrives and the reunion becomes extremely awkward. After Nick leaves for about an hour, he returns to find both Gatsby and Daisy happy. Daisy cried tears of joy. The rain stopped, and Gatsby invites Nick and Daisy over to his house. He showed them his possessions. Daisy becomes overwhelmed by his luxurious lifestyle. Gatsby tells Daisy about his the long nights he spends outside staring into the green light dreaming of their future happiness together. Nick wonders if Daisy can live up to Gatsby’s vision of her. Gatsby idealized Daisy in his mind to the point that the real Daisy probably couldn’t compare. At the moment it seems like their romance has fully rekindled. Gatsby calls on his personal piano player, Klipspringer and has him play a song called “Ain’t We Got Fun?” Nick realizes that Gatsby and Daisy have forgotten that he is there so he quietly leaves them together.

Gatsby was born James Gatz on a North Dakota farm. He attended college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, but dropped out after two weeks. He worked as a janitor to pay for his tuition. He worked on Lake Superior the next summer fishing for salmon and digging for clams. One day, he saw a wealthy copper mogul name Dan Cody, on his yacht and went out to warn him of the storm ahead. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody’s mistress didn’t allow him to collect his inheritance. Gatsby used his experience as motivation to become a wealthy successful man. Nick doesn’t see Gatsby or Daisy for a while since the reunion at his house. One afternoon Nick visits Gatsby’s house and finds Tom there along with the Sloanes. Gatsby lets Tom know that he knows Daisy. Tom is aware of Daisy’s solo visits to Gatsby’s mansion. He is suspicious but doesn’t know about Gatsby and Daisy’s love. Tom and Daisy attend a
party at Gatsby’s house. Tom has no interest in the party, his dislike for Gatsby causes him to spy on Daisy. Daisy is not having a good time at the party. Gatsby’s gardener interrupts the story talking about draining the pool. Nick notices that he’s very late for work and leaves Gatsby house. On his way out he shouts to Gatsby that he’s worth more than the Buchanan’s and all their friends. Nick goes to work but is too distracted to focus, and even refuses to meet with Jordan for a date. George Wilson stays up all night talking to Michaelis about Myrtle. He tells him that before Myrtle died he confronted her about having an affair and told her that she cannot hide her sins from the eyes of God. Wilson believes that the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are the eyes of God and concludes that whoever was driving the car that killed Myrtle must have been her lover. He claims that God demands revenge and leaves to track down the owner of the car. He searches for Tom because he thinks that he might know who the owner of the car is because he remembers Tom driving it earlier that day. Tom couldn’t have done it because he arrived after the accident. Wilson makes his way to Gatsby’s house where he finds Gatsby floating on water. Mr. Gatz was very proud of his son and fills Nick in on Gatsby’s earlier life. Nick grows tried of the East, he decides to move back to the Midwest. He breaks up with Jordan, who claims to already been engaged to another man. Before he leaves he runs into Tom in New York City. Tom admits to telling Wilson that Gatsby owned the car that killed Myrtle, and talks about how upset he was for giving up his apartment in the city. He says that Gatsby deserved to die. Nick then realizes that Tom and Daisy are both careless people that wreck people and things, knowing that money will protect them from negative consequences. Although this story happened on the East Coast, Nick, Tom and Daisy are all from the West. Nick believes that the reaction to living the fast-paced lifestyle shaped their behaviors. Nick compares winter in the Midwest to the City and finds that there are no comparison to the Midwest. Before moving back to Minnesota, Nick visits Gatsby’s mansion for the last time. He looked out onto the water and imaged Long Island completely empty. He compared life to Gatsby’s and the events that had taken place. Gatsby’s wealth and success mirrored the American dream, he failed to realize that his dream already ended, his goal became hollow and empty. Nick saw Gatsby’s struggle to create a future with Daisy as a boat going against a storm current which basically carries them back to the past.
