Examples Of Figurative Language In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld
I walked outside and it was hot vs. I took a leap outside into the sun that blazed down on me it felt like I was wearing millions of winter coats. Which one help you visualize which is happening better? The book I'm reading which is "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld used a lot of figurative language throughout this story. For an example on page 238 it states, "it just felt flat, like a song she'd heard to many time." By using a simile it helped me understand what she meant by flat. If that simile wasn't there I could of though it meant deflated or flat like a pancake. To add on, using figurative language makes the book more clear and it allows the book to continue with a flow. As you can see, the book I chose to read "Uglies" contains figurative

There is always a moment where one’s world turns gray and everything seems dull and hopeless. In “Wednesday Wars,” by Gary D. Schmidt, the character, Holling, experiences a dull depressing time period of his life, his seventh grade year. The author then uses descriptive language, repetition, and symbolism to create a dreary, sorrowful mood. He makes Holling’s world look like there is no hope and there was no room for improvement.…

First type of figurative language, “Yellow shoes the color of a pat of butter” (40). is a metaphor that stuck out the most to me. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Eddie thinks that a guys shoes are the color of butter. He points this out in the story because he says “Mr. yellow shoes seemed like a dude who could ice someone, stick a knife into a chest and step back quickly…

James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…

There are many ways that writers use to help us visualize their story. The author of The Treasure of Lemon Brown uses a lot of descriptive and figurative language to make the story real . When he uses phrases such as, ”Never compare your weakness to other people’s strengths. This text is about the history of this little boy trying to play basketball but, his dad doesn’t want him to play, he wants him to study a lot a be a good kid in school but, after a discussion his son goes out for a walk and he founds an old house and he goes in and found a something that is gonna create a lot of drama .” In the story “the treasure of lemon brown” by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses descriptive and figurative language to develop the mood and the characters in the story.…

Yes, I agree that figurative language improves the understanding of the novel in Woods Runner. I reached that conclusion because the picture the words paint gives you an idea of what is happening throughout the novel. Firstly, an example of this is found in chapter 4 on page 27 where it says “Samuel smelled it before he saw anything. Not just the smoke from the fires. But the thick, heavy smell. Blood. Death.” and this adds to the way the reader would paint a picture of the story in his head. Next, another example is where it says “He had seen no fresh sign until he came halfway up the fifth ridge, a thickly forested round hump shaped like the back of a giant animal.”(Paulsen, 19) giving…

In the passage from Eudora Welty’s autobiography, One Writer’s Beginnings, Welty depicts how her love for reading was influenced by the challenges Mrs. Calloway, the librarian, presented by guarding the books and by her mother’s example of continuous reading. The zeal she has towards reading creates a motivational tone for the passage, allowing the reader to deeply connect with the meaning of the text. Welty conveys that the willingness to read is established at a young age. She uses many rhetorical devices to emphasise her opinions on reading, such as figurative language, distinct syntax, and unique diction.…

Figurative language allows readers to better understand the message that the author is trying to say. Personification allows writers to easily reveal what they are trying to say when descriptions fail them. By including personification, the author can clearly communicate how he felt at a specific time. As a reader, personification allows us to easier relate to the idea or feeling the author is conveying. Wiesel uses personification on page thirty nine, when he says “Remorse began to gnaw at me.” Remorse cannot eat away at a person, but it allows the reader to understand how guilty Elie felt when he did not stand up for his father. A second example of figurative language used in Night is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing allows the author to keep…

Figurative language is a common literary element in many stories, but is very crucial to them. Metaphors, similes, and other kinds of figurative language are used to give the readers insight that are effective and impactful. Similes are especially frequent in “The Scarlet Ibis.” An example is, “... the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle” (416). This brings to the front that sense of sorrow and melancholy once again. Along with this, the figurative language illustrates a perception of loss and regret from…

It could be argued that without figurative language, enjoyable literature would cease to exist. The written word would be like a textbook, convening facts with no depth, setting or emotion. James Hurst’s The Scarlet Ibis is a perfect example. James Hurst uses figurative language to set the mood of the story and to foreshadow Doodle’s death. It mixes in with the story like a picture and a paintbrush to successfully aid the reader in becoming immersed with the tale’s setting and to inform them of the grim fate that awaits Doodle. Figurative language is a key part of the book and it would be very dull and lifeless without.…

In in the following paragraphs of the story, the author used various effects to effectively convey the feeling and imagery of the story to the reader. In paragraph five the this phrase was first used “sounds that to the couple seemed as loud as men sawing through hard wood.”, this phrase being a simile was used to compare how loud the mice were to something the reader could relate to. This was effective because the reader can then used their past experiences to figure out just how loud the mice were. In this phrase he also used the word interminable to show that the sounds were not just one long loud sound but multiple sound right after another, which also allows reader to image how the sounds really were. Then, he uses the phrase “...the…

A metaphor is where you show how two unrelated things are similar. For example by saying "Love is a roller-coaster.” A key aspect of a metaphor is use a specific transference of a word into another context. The human mind creates comparisons between different things. The best writers use metaphors. Like poetry, a metaphor will express a thousand different meanings all at once, allowing the writer to convey much more content than they could do otherwise. More than playing simple word games, the use of metaphors in your writing can elevate your stories to a place next to the greatest authors in the world.…
