3.) Giles Corey definitely provides comic relief. He doesn’t take a lot of matters of the court very seriously. He makes jokes out of things and doesn’t take Danforth seriously. Giles helps keep a balance of emotions and tension in The Crucible. Giles said: “A fart on Thomas Putnam, that is what I say to that!” Many people in the play feel that way about Thomas Putnam, but Corey is the only one with the guts to say it the
way it is. I also laughed when he said they can’t arrest him for “contempt of a hearing” because they needed to be in full session to arrest him. This is a funny and brave move by Giles.
5.) John has been covering up his sin of “lechery,” but John also did what others in the village will not do. John is confessing that he is human and that he is honestly sorry and ashamed of what he has done to Elizabeth. John kept this secret even though Elizabeth suspected, and his lies were eating away at his soul.
