In beowulf good and evil played a big part because, it also deals with heaven hell which also represents good and evil. Well first let's start with good. Good in beowulf played a big part because, beowulf was a hero he had a lot of good in him and did a lot of good things but later on he fame got to him. Beowulf fought for the good side against grendel the bad side.
In beowulf heaven is represented as good and it comes up many times in the story, light and darkness are closely associated throughout the poem representing good and evil. In the poem Grendel is represented as dark or evil and Beowulf fights literally the demons of hell. Grendel is the embodiment of evil, Grendel is the descendent if Cain who was Adam and eves son he killed his brother able and for that he was banished fork god and all things good. Grendel isn’t just evil because of his ancestors he also is very evil and does evil things. Grendel goes to warriors while they are sleeping and picks them off one by one he also goes to the mead hall and takes people and eats them.
Grendel’s mother is more understanding but when she finds out Beowulf killed her son she wants to avenge him. So she goes and takes hrothgars friend and killes him after that Beowulf hears about it and goes over there and as he dives in the lake she takes him under which makes the fight harder for Beowulf. She is about the same strength as Grendel but she fights different which makes the fight harder for Beowulf to win but in one he finds a sword down there and killes her as well.
So good and evil play big parts in Beowulf because it is a old story which has a lot to do with religion and it good and evil ties into heaven and hell and also light and darkness. Beowulf fought for honor but over time let that get to him and he realized he couldn’t do that and Grendel and his mother were both evil demons seeking to kill whoever was

Grendel is a monster, no matter what way he is described. A being that brings misery to all . This makes the next statement just captivating: the two Grendel’s in the poem of Beowulf and the novel Grendel, are two completely different beings. In the poem, Grendel is a mindless brute for a hero to slay; in the novel he interprets philosophy and is an unbiased mind viewing mankind .…

Grendel was evil, but shown that we could give him some sympathy in the movie while his mother was supposed to have a battle with Beowulf as stated in the poem but instead, she seduced Beowulf and asked for a son. While women's were barely mentioned in the poem, in the movie, they had a bigger role like Wealthow being more involved in the movie. While watching and reading the story of Beowulf, it amused me how they compare and contrast the poem in the movie, not all scenes in the movie were the same because they wanted the audience to be…

I think that the biggest theme in Beowulf has to be good vs. evil. This theme is stressed very much throughout the book in symbolism. Grendel represents pure evil, while Beowulf represents the exact polar opposite of the monster Grendel. In Beowulf anything evil or bad is related to hell, while anything good is because of their faith in god. The original concept of good and evil can be traced back to the sons of Adam and Eve, Cain and Able. Cain killed his brother because god favored his sacrifice more than his. Cain is the origin of evil and Able is the origin of good. Grendel is a descendant of Cain, and is pure evil he takes pleasure in causing misfortune for others. Beowulf is the definition of good…

Each monster Beowulf fights against represents the adversary of what the Germanic culture deems as righteous and good. Grendel, the first monster, did not like the fact that there were parties in the mead hall so he tried to put an end to their pleasure and happiness. After Grendel, the people of Herot were peaceful and comfortable but Grendel’s mom took that peace away by instilling fear in the citizens. Later on, the dragon is also represented as an adversary since the Germanic culture generally loves and has a need for gold but the dragon took that away by hoarding the gold.…

Ultimately, Grendel and his mother affect the storyline of Beowulf by being evil figures within the epic. Because they are decedents of Cain from the Bible, Grendel and his mother cause the people of Herot to become fearful and turn back to their pagan. The people of Herot’s fear eventually lead them to call for the assistance of someone mighty such as the Scandinavian prince, Beowulf. By being two obstacle that approached Beowulf, Grendel and his mother basically sacrificed themselves unknowingly to prove the “perfections” and strengths of the…

Grendel, generally seen as a monster or giant, is one of the main antagonists in the popular Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf. Portrayed as the epitome of evil, Grendel brutally attacks the meadhall of the Danes for twelve years before being defeated by the epic hero Beowulf. Gardner, through his book Grendel, creates a new point of view of these events through Grendel eyes, as Grendel learns about the humans and how they seem like wild animals in their actions. In Grendel by John Gardner, Gardner reveals that “Man must have evil so that he may have good to balance…” through the use of juxtaposition and aphorisms (Gardner 6).…

This theme and parallel structure of the poem carries with it the idea that all that lives must perish. The poem is not meant to be recount of Danish or Swedish history, but instead an archaic legend retold with the addition of the values and scrutiny of the unknown author. As a work of art, the author of Beowulf included the monsters such as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon as the personification of the darkness and true evil. This detracts from the historical accuracy of the poem, but provides structure for the building of theme and parallelism in the poem according to Tolkien. The use of pagan and Christian references such as the mentioning of Cain and the reciting of verses related to God give insight to the author’s point of view and the conflicting views of the Anglo-Saxons in their transition between a pagan ideal and a Christian ideals, thus indicating that the author added their own style and criticisms into the poem. Tolkien believes that it is that evidence that make criticism from a historical point of view not as effective as a criticism from a solely poetic point of…

A villain is a person who is evil or malicious actions. In Beowulf, Grendel is the first villain that we meet. Some villainous qualities of Grendel are that he is cursed, he kills people without thinking about it and doesn’t feel bad about it. Plus, he looks scary. Grendel comes from the line of Cain a murderous (106) line punished by God for killing Abel. He kills people and hurts the mead hall, Herot. Many villains are cursed, evil beings, like Grendel. Another villainous quality that Grendel has is that he kills people and doesn’t feel bad about it. He is unaffected by the fact that he is killing tons of innocent men (444). Grendel has a very scary and intimidating appearance. With his large figure and great strength, he looks like your…

In the story of Beowulf you get a glimpse of many different themes throughout this epic. Those themes range from good and evil to those of death and glory. The story itself depicts a period in history when life was lead "blind" through the teachings of the book of the lord and his spoken words. At this same period in history traditional pagan religious practices and beliefs have slowly given way to the ideals and philosophy of Christianity. Many of the themes held within the pages of Beowulf stem from the proverbs and fables recited and practiced in the Old Testament, while concurrently adding pagan beliefs of monsters, demons, and multiple gods. The most striking of these biblical comparisons is viewed between Grendel (the protagonist, evil rival of Beowulf) and Cain (the evil brother of Able). In the Old Testament, Cain kills his brother Abel and is consequently punished and banished from the Garden of Eden by God. His actions proved to have a dramatic effect on the life of Grendel and the choices he makes throughout his life until his epic struggle for victory over the Geats and Beowulf himself. Symbolically and genetically, Grendel assumes the role of his ancestor Cain in this epic story as an outsider, disowned from the rest of society, finding a home only among the unknown (evil) and those who have sinned. Feeding on the flesh and blood of god's creations, Grendel starts a vigorous battle to destroy all that is good and the things he can not have. To the Anglo-Saxons and the creators of Beowulf, one of the worst crimes a person could have committed in life was that of murdering ones kin (or the killing of one's brother). During the era of this writing the figure of Cain is used metaphorically to represent "the unknown" (chaos, evil) and the presence of evil. Cain defies gods will and so he secludes himself to the evils of the surrounding world only to foster a hatred of god and a family cursed for eternity. The period in which Grendel and…
