Greed is the desire for more than needed or deserved for one’s own selfish interest and there is no doubt that is the underlying theme in John Steinbeck’s novel ‘’ The Pearl’’ (1947). As in the novel greed can manifest itself through different forms but this assignment will focus on how greed manifests itself through nature.
In ‘’The Pearl’’ writer John Steinbeck refers to how greed is a part of the human nature by showcasing how characters behaviors suddenly changed when Kino found the pearl. In the beginning of the novel Kino went to the sea and searched for the pearl to be able to pay the medical care for his son but when Kino got his hands on the precious pearl that was worth a fortune he starts to imagine a different life for his family that he have never thought about and his desire for material things grew and forgot the initial reason why he wanted the pearl from the first place. Throughout the story, Steinbeck writes examples on how greed manifests itself through different perspectives and in this chase how human is a greedy creature.
