Examples Of Grit By Angela Duckworth
People today typically do not have grit, as it is not ordinary for someone to choose an easy major because they are not determined to follow their passions. But people need to realize that if that is truly a passion in life, they will have enough grit to achieve their passion. The author, Angela Duckworth describes what grit is by giving an example in the novel “Grit” which one girl named, Chia had a strong passion for music ever since she was a little girl. Chia would practice the piano quite frequently even when her strenuous school schedule in college did not stop her. While her hard work during school earned her many degrees, her passion of playing music continued. She played at multiple well known venues including, Carnegie Hall. During
an interview, Duckworth asked a question regarding to Chia’s musical accomplishments, and even though Chia said she had a little bit of talent, she credited herself mostly with the time she put in practicing throughout childhood. After Chia made that comment to Duckworth, Duckworth wrote in her essay saying, “So, yes, she has some talent--but she’s a striver, too”(26). Someone who is striving to accomplish their passions more than likely has some degree of talent, but going beyond that by practicing or doing whatever is more important. While the people who already have a little bit of talent have an advantage over those who do not, it still comes down to how determined are those people to accomplishing their passions. For most people with a schedule comparable to Chia’s, the end result would be those people giving up on their passion and not having enough grit to continue them. For Chia to accomplish all that she did in such stressful times, proves that she has grit. There are so many people today that have the opportunity to do what they want in life or go after their passions, but once an obstacle gets in their way, they give up. Chia illustrates grit in a perfect way, and if everyone was similar to Chia then our country would probably be a happier place.
