People assume all white man tells the truth and black man are considered liars but that’s not always the case.
“Atticus sometimes said that one way to tell whether a witness was lying or telling the truth was to listen rather than watch…I found myself believing him in spite of his protesting too much. He seemed to be s respecting Negro…” (Lee, 192). Tom Robinson was accused of hurting Mayella but he couldn’t have because of his injured arm. They thought Tom was lying because of his skin tone and went to Bob Ewell’s side because he’s white. “You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?’...Below us, nobody liked Tom Robinson’s answer.” (Lee, 197). If a white man said he felt sorry it would be acceptable but when a black man says that he would be punished. If a black man was supposed to not even look at a white woman then think of the punishment they would get for feeling sorry for a white woman. A majority of white people in 1930 wouldn’t even look or walk next to a black person without being judged but imagine defending for
someone. People will judge others for their action but others will try to bring you down. All Atticus wanted was justice for the good. “You’ve got everything to lose from this, Atticus, I mean everything” (Lee, 146). Atticus knew if he took the case he would lose the respect of others but he wanted to show people what was right. Atticus wants justice but people are judging him and don’t want to defend Tom. Some men even tried to hurt Atticus and his family. “Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He’s ruinin’ the family, that’s what he’s doin’ ” (Lee, 83). Even his own family is talking bad about him and they think he’s hurting the family. Everyone counts on family to be there for them and support them but Atticus family talked bad about him. If they are saying things behind his back then imagine what others were saying. Being called a negro-lover was bad enough but having mix children was the worst thing possible. Dolphus Raymond is a white man who had kids of mixed race and people judged him for it. “‘He’s s got a colored woman and all sorts of mixed cillun…’ ‘He doesn’t look like trash…why does he do like that?’ ‘That’s just his way… He’s sorta been drunk ever since” (Lee, 161). Everyone saw him as a drunken man who loved colored people. They never got to know him they just judged him for having kids of mixed color. In the Jim Crows Law it said mix children would destroy and ruin America.”Wh-oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple,’ he said. ’Some folks don’t- like the way I live… folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey- that’s why he won’t change his ways. He can’t help himself, that’s way he lives the way he does.” (Lee, 200). He knows how cruel people can be and he just wants people to have a reason why he acts that way. He trusts in Scout and Dill because they wouldn’t judge and they would better understand him. People shouldn’t judge people until they get to know them and actually talk to them. Tom Robinson, Atticus, and Dolphus Raymond were all judged by racist people who believe colored people are wrong and no good. People judge people because of the color of other people’s skin, for helping people who are colored, and for being a lover of blacks with mix children. Racism is still dealt with today and people are hated even just being friends with a colored person. There shouldn’t be hatred toward people anymore because it’s a new generation and we are all equal. We should treat everyone as equal and respect people like they would respect us. It’s time to put end of this hatred and violence.
