Examples Of Health Disparities
Health disparities is defined as significant differences with regard to the rates of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or life expectancy between one population and another (Miller,2015). One example of a health disparity that affects older adults much more often than other classes would be something such as dementia. Dementia is a disease that affects older people much more often than younger. This disease also progresses as one gets older so the oldest of adults are even more strongly affected. Another example would be a disease such as hearing loss. While it can still occur with those that are younger, those that are older are much more commonly affected by this.

I will be focusing mainly on the above key themes in my paper. Then again, it will surely be difficult to encompass all of the measures taken to reduce all of the health inequalities mentioned above, therefore, I will be selecting two key themes that have enough substance in order to be addressed in length. Still to this day, slavery and the following inequality in race have brought down the African race in America. Examples like the Freedom Train in the 1940s that made concessions to white Southerners, and even as far as today in Hurricane Katrina where government support took incredibly long to respond and aid the people of mostly poor African communities that were flooded. Another example is of the differences in home ownership. “Equity in Owner Occupied Housing is most of the wealth for most Americans” (Course Slides p. 26), and this created a discrepancy in race due to the government’s unwillingness enforcing laws to prohibit housing discrimination in the 1950s and other times. Through the Freedom Train that only seemed to represent the…

Discriminatory practices, and who could be discriminated against Culture – Culture is one type of discrimination. The definition of culture in simple terms is someone’s background, including their beliefs and their religion. Someone who could receive culture discrimination could be that of a Muslim male. For example in a health and social care setting of a doctors surgery, a white British doctor may give the Muslim bad treatment, for example not prescribing them with medication due to their belief and the Muslims religion, which would be discriminatory behaviour on the doctors behalf. Health Disparities Health disparities refer to the glaring differences in the distribution of the burden of diseases, injuries and opportunities to access the available healthcare services from the facilities in a given society.
