First, when people think of Hell, they seem to think about a fiery pit of physical abuse, with sufferers burning to crisps over and over again. When looking further
into the situation, Hell can be seen as an icy pit, being frozen with pain and despair for eternity. Being frozen in oblivion can be worse in the long run than being physically abused and punished. Even if victims of hell are indeed physically abused and tortured, they are still stuck or "frozen" there. Second, In Dante's Inferno, even Dante was afraid to step foot in the deepest ring of hell, Cocytus, examining the sufferer's bodies, frozen in awkward positions, “covered wholly in ice,” and “showing like straw in glass…” With Satan himself residing here, freezing over all parts of the realm, including the sinners' and evil people minds and bodies for eternity, forcing the thoughts of pain and despair to be frozen in their thoughts forever. Finally, Hell is supposed to be the place farthest away from light and warmth, which can support the idea that Hell is indeed filled of coldness and ice, being that it would be hard to not be light and warm if it were made entirely of fire.
In conclusion, Hell can be seen as an icy abyss more than a fiery pit, by imagining past the basic images of Hell, using information from Dante’s Inferno, and the fact that Hell is the opposite of warm and light. Hell almost seems as it can be described figuratively, since it is a place of physical suffering and torment, when really it is just the state of being frozen in despair and oblivion from the life before.
