Imperialism is the process of expanding the country’s influence and power through two methods: political diplomacy and by the force of the military. In the nineteenth century, when Imperialism started, the United States had a Civil War and managed to have a dominant industrial power without any imperialistic ideas. Subsequently, after 1890, the Progressive Movement anchored itself into the government, led to the end of westward expansion, and started the Manifest Destiny soon after. A change happened because of financial panic which led to a huge economic depression in 1893. An example of imperialism is when the aggression of Nazi’s during World War II gave Germans business cartels and the opportunity to pillage resources and benefit from the…

Imperialism means to have an unequal human and territorial relationship, usually in the form of an empire, based on ideas of superiority and practices of dominance, and involving the extension of authority and control of one state or people over another. While the concept of imperialism did accomplish many things it still had its down falls. One thing the concept of imperialism accomplished was the building of The Panama Canal. This was a good thing because it provided a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans which was good for exchanging goods. This was a bad thing because America still went and built The Panama Canal even though the Spanish did want them to. At the turn of the 19th century imperialism was not a proper and legitimate policy for the United States because it was politically, military and socially problematic.…

Imperialism is the “acquisition of control over the government and the economy of another nation, usually by victory. The U.S. became an imperialistic world power in the late nineteenth century by gaining control over the Hawaiian Islands and, after the Spanish American War (1898), Guam, the Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico” (Davison, Delay, Heyrman, Lytle, & Stoff, 2008, p. G-4). American Imperialism has been a big part of U.S. history ever since the American Revolution. The U.S. became an imperialist nation at the end of the 19th century because Americans wanted to expand overseas with their belief in manifest destiny. “As Democratic editor John L. O’Sullivan put it, that it had become the United States’ “manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions” (2008, p. G-5). “Since the 1840’s expansionists had spoken of a manifest destiny to overspread the North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific” (2008, p. 611). “But it flourished in the 1890s, when Mahan provided the naval theory necessary to make the leap and the vanishing American frontier supplied an economic rationale for extending Manifest Destiny” (2008, p. 615). The Industrial revolution was the ammunition for Imperialism which…

According to the Dictionary Imperialism means “the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.” To me Imperialism means the gaining of power by a government or ruler of a colony or country. The goal of an Imperialist or Imperialist nation is to gain power over other nations or colonies. They gain this power through “infiltration and annexation, political pressure, war and military conquest” (Alphahistory). When the land being taken is won the imperialist nation becomes the “Mother Country” and now owns another colony or country. Imperialism was actually weird thing for the U.S to engage in because at first the country was set on not getting into…
