Examples Of Insane In The Cask Of Amontillado

In The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator shows with his thoughts and actions that he is insane. In the story, Poe’s narrator explains he had been insulted thousands of times by a guy named Fortunato. Now he vows to do revenge. The thought of getting back at him makes him happy, and he plans to do it without getting caught. At the beginning of the story, he talks about getting his revenge on Fortunato. He starts being nice to him, not making him think anything of it. This is how he lures him into his trap. This is shown when it states, “I drink,” he said, “to the buried that repose around us.” “And I drink to your long life” (6). This reveals that the narrator is manipulative. He knows that he needs to be sarcastic and be friendly with
Later on in the story, he has set up his final trap to kill him. He now plans to take charge and finally avenge himself. He will finally get what he wants. This is revealed when he says the following, “From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too astounded to resist” (8). This reveals that he is super insane, the thought of chaining him to the wall and leaving him to die brings him joy. Based on this information, you can tell he has no regrets for what he is about to do. He has no regard for Fortunato's life. Finally the narrator brings him into the far darkness of the catacombs to the door where there is apparently a special wine. He sends Fortunato in to get the wine, but he runs into the wall; he is now weary, so the narrator locks him to the wall with the chains he had placed earlier. This is shown when he says, “I heard the furious vibrations of the chains”. The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction” (9).
