had to rid of the uncomfortable feeling.
Fear and hysteria destroy good judgement psychologically and physically.
Psychologically, when the mind is caught in the madness of fear, it has two options, to either succumb to it and dwell with it or to find a way out of it by either lying or deceiving or another sort of way of taking the attention of the situation at hand disturbing their peace. Physically, the mind will send nerve messages to act out in violent behavior, put the person in a dangerous situation, caught up in lies, or even to the extent of killing. In The Crucible, these girls are put into these two situations. They decide to take the path where they take the focus off them by accusing others of witchery upon them and others and being able to “detect” the devil in people’s soul. They also act out into violence by saying people’s souls are attacking them. This isn’t a summary but just important events that have happened. To get to the point of interest, these girls acted in both ways thinking that it will rid of their fear and hysteria but instead creating more by having to worry about the lies that have been told and the innocent that have been killed in their cause of not being to man-up and take the punishment that they rightfully deserve. So, psychologically, these girls are being destroyed from inside out from the fear on their mind of getting caught in the act of lying in court and the deaths of the
innocent.
Another town had recently gone through the same exact problem; witchcraft. There was mass hysteria and a humongous fear of either being accused of witchcraft or having to testify against someone. This same fear was spread about Salem. With a anxiety running amok in the small town, people were being accused of witchcraft when these people had good reputations for years and being known as a good folk when three girls all of a sudden come in and turn things around and give people a reason to turn on each other. There is an empathetic tone to the play because these poor people haven’t done anything but good and good-will to this town and given their all to the future and replenishment of the place they call home. So, these three girls had a little bit of extra support from the start because they could compare the witchery accused of being conjured to the the other case of it in a nearby town. Also, a Reverend came that supposedly self-made himself as an expert on witches so he wouldn’t admit that he is wrong and ruin his reputation so this gave the girls a big boost to help the campaign they were running.
That uncomfortable feeling these girls were experiencing is normal in everyday life. We can compare this throughout history. For instance, when the Red Scare was happening in the 10’s, there was a mass hysteria of Communism in America. Now this a huge deal compared to the little towns going through accusations of witchcraft but it has the same concept. The people that are scared of something have took the path of wrong doing are put into charge of figuring it out and they chose to spread a mass hysteria instead of the harder way out of communicating or solving the issue through a punishment or something else. There are many other examples of this throughout history.
In conclusion, little or a lot, fear and hysteria can easily trigger or diminish good and bad judgment. It causes rational decisions that can lead to drastic, even fatal situations such as this one. The mind works quite systematically to the point where it is easily predicted. Either it takes the easy way out and lies or finds a way to take the pressure or punishment of itself or it takes the hard way out and tries to fix the problem at hand rightfully or takes the punishment needed to learn. The three girls had to make a choice and they chose wrong. It obviously came to despair as it always have to. This essay should be informative to the point of knowing whether to do the good or bad and to do the right from the beginning.
