Examples Of Just Simply
Just Simply...Sitting

Page One

To My Grandson, Dax
May you always seek and find your inner strength and calm

Page Two
Let me tell you a story about one little boy who never thought he was brave.

He never thought he was strong either, or even smart, clever, or bright.

In fact, he never thought he was special, not in any way. Truthfully, he never thought much of himself... at all!

Page Three

His name was Simply. Maximus Moore Simply, to be exact.
Usually, he preferred to be called just simply, Max.

Page Four
The fact was, Max’s name was actually the subject of a lot of teasing.

Oh yes! The daily playground banter at Noyze Elementary School always included cries of...

“ Oh look! Here comes that Simply ‘simple’ kid again!”

Max knew that he didn’t like bullies, or hurtful teasers, or mean actions either, that was for sure!

*(Illustration 6: on pg. 9)
(-Max sitting on bedroom floor/ raining outside)

Page Ten

You must know by now that Max was a nice boy, so don’t get me wrong. Max was just so unused to such angry feelings...that caused him such angry thoughts, which led to such angry and thoughtless actions... Well, you get the picture.
And, getting into trouble, hurting others... well, it was simply just so UNLIKE Max!

Page Eleven

BUT, most of all, what Max really knew was that he, Maximus Moore Simply, was becoming exactly all those things that HE DIDN’T LIKE!

*(Illustration 6B: on pg. 11)
(-Max pushing friend down on playground)

Page Twelve

What happened next, you ask? Well, Max’s days at Noyze Elementary School, and also at home, seemed to become more and more difficult.
Max pushed and shoved other kids, he’d stick out his foot just to trip classmates and watch them fall...why, one day Max even teased and bullied his very best friend about her name!!

(Her name was ‘Truly Mahoney’...so I’ll just let you come to your own conclusions.)

But, the point here was most unimaginable... Max had truly hurt even his best friend’s

And now, as the school year is nearing summer break, you will see this change... if you look closely, and listen carefully enough to the quiet, that is.
*(No illustration on pg. 24 - just color background)

Page Twenty-Five

Oh, of course, there are kids running, skipping, and jumping on the playground, including Max at times, as well...that will always be the case, it’s certain.

In fact, there are plenty of noises to be heard at Noyze Elementary School at recess time, the way it should be, we know this, but...

What you won’t see or hear at Noyze Elementary School are bullies and teasers. No, not now...not at this time!

Page Twenty-Six And, if you dare to ask why or how this positive turn of events came to be... well, someone is bound to excitedly explain to you all about sitting, thinking, controlling angry feelings, oh, and of course, about making choices, too!
Maybe others will elaborate more about thinking thoughts of happiness, and calmness...

But... if you really want to know how such change came about, just ask Truly Mahoney. She has a knack for finding her best friend, Maximus Moore Simply, anywhere!

I think they made this change instead of keeping it the same to show how it took a while for them to be friends, even after Max still didn’t want to be friends because of what had happened at the millpond. Another difference is that Freak ended up dying in his sleep instead of dying in the hospital a few days after having a seizure. They made this change probably because it would be too expensive to get the hospital and everything, and in the book Max runs to the medical research and breaks through, but in the movie he just runs in and I think they did that because it would be too expensive.…

Max is not like typical female characters in other general books, like those that are flimsy and girlish. Max stands at the highest point of the hierarchy that she belongs, and needs to act as the leader, as the one who can take control of what is happening around her. She somewhat reminds me of Katniss in the book “Hunger Games”. Both girls are under immense pressure of substantial dangers and need to step over the level of being a “girl” into a individual being that can take hold of oneself and others. At the start of the story, Max has a straightforward goal of searching for her flock’s parents, and is able to pull her flock through many dangers with the help of the hope in her mind. However, towards the end, Max and the rest of the flock realize how the searching of their parents is completely useless. With her goal perished, Max temporarily falls into a state of distress and hopelessness. Nevertheless, Max soon trounces the dilemma and return to her original self-assertive character, even a…

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Before Maxwell and Kevin became close friends, Max was known as an impulsive, violent, and unsafe individual because of his careless actions. Max had even said himself, “I had a way of saying things with my fists and my feet” confirming that he expressed his feelings quite physically. Nevertheless, when the boys became one as Freak the Mighty, it influenced the way Maxwell dealt with things. For example, he learned to control his temper and using his incredibly great speed and strength to protect his loved ones. In other words, he developed a skill to use his strengths rightfully. Furthermore, Freak constantly encouraged Maxwell to do well in his education. This helped Max overcome his negative mindset on how he was brainless and never attempted to try by using his Learning Disorder as an excuse.…

In correspondence, Max had the notion that “Living was living. The price was guilt and shame.” (pg.208, Zusak), signifying his belief that by abandoning his family, he was indeed alive, but only at the sacrifice of the ones he cared about. Max is haunted by the fact that, “when he was pushed out by the rest of the family, the relief struggled inside of him like an obscenity. It was something he didn’t want to feel, but nonetheless, he felt it with such gusto it made him want to throw up” (pg. 193, Zusak). So he carries his burden, his shame, along with him.…

The animals are ready to burst out of their cages and breathe the fresh air of middle school grounds. Students frantically begin to hush their peers in order to be the first let out. In the jungle, there are always two or three monkeys that decide to create chaos. Among the others, mumbling could be heard about the upcoming games about to take place. Many already started to decide what teams and students would be taking over the field. In Wilson Southern Middle School, those monkeys at recess decided to play a rule-breaking game of shark and minnows. Along with this game, they played a back breaking lunch bag tag, and an awkward imaginary game. Recess does not only contain games, but it has a huge impact on the body and its health.…
