Determinants of Health Determinants of health are the factors that contribute to any particular person’s current state of health. The four determinants of health to be discussed in this paper are environment, lifestyle, genetics, and medical care. These are the Blum’s Model of health determinants. According to Shi & Singh (2015), “Health determinants are major factors that overall affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations” (p. 52). As a health administrator it is important to increase awareness of the various factors that have an influence on the quality of life. Shi & Singh (2015) found that “In the United States, the preponderance of health care expenditures is devoted to the treatment of medical conditions rather than to the prevention and control of factors that produce those medical conditions in the first place” (p. 52). The environment in which we live to sustain life play a role in being a threat to the human survival. Lifestyle factors significantly contribute to health and diseases. Social Status as discussed in this week’s lesson a falls under the environment determinant of health. A family that has a high or low income determines the living conditions such as safe housing. The social status determines if the family is able to afford foods that are healthy. Many families that live in a health environment has support from their individual families, friends and overall the community. Health status can improve with education.
