Examples Of Mcwhirter Framework
The McWhirter framework for intervention and prevention for children and adolescents at-risk has three definite continuums. The first one in the McWhirter framework is the at-risk continuum. The at-risk continuum reflects the degree ranging from minimal risk to imminent risk which children are at jeopardy for serious behaviors (Vernon, 2009, p. 340). These serious behaviors can include “substance abuse, risky sexual behaviors, depression, violence, gang involvement, and conduct disorders (Vernon, 2009, p. 340).” The second continuum in the framework is the approach continuum. Maybe inventions and preventions for depression is for adults, it is important that counselor never uses a intervention or prevention that is not age appropriate with a student. Instead a counselor should tailor interventions and prevention towards the developmental level of the child or adolescent. McWirter and colleagues suggest that “counselor working with depressed youth should implement prevention, early invention, or treatment strategies that involve the family, the school, and the community (Vernon, 2009, p. 346).” The counselor should respect the students culture influences and encourage family support. In the school setting, the counselor can plan invention that have specific topics or gear towards life skills. “Prevention in the community level can be directed to reducing social stigma associated with seeking treatment for a mental disorder (Vernon, 2009).” Some inventions for depression include cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, family therapy, and antidepressant. If a child or adolescent is severely depressed, a professional school counselor should refer the student to a outside counselor who specialize in depression. Also, one serious symptom of depression is suicidal thoughts.
