Examples Of Micro Aggressions
Many of the micro aggressions that I have experienced have manifested from racism that were specifically directed towards my “perceived” Mexican or immigrant identity. Many people wrongly assumed that I am Mexican because of the color of my skin and physical characteristics. They categorize me into a one dimensional identity without taking into account my other ethnic and national identities, which are Salvadorian and American. Some micro aggressions I have experienced include comments about speaking English so well for a “Mexican” or how I should not speak Spanish since we live in America. Often times I also get insulting comments on my perceived citizenship status, such as being called a “wetback” or being told to go back to Mexico. I receive
these types of micro aggressions more recently as the political discourse surrounding Mexican and immigrants currently in the 2016 Presidential Election have tended to criminalize Mexicans and paint them in a negative light.
