Oceania's government's goal was to brainwash its' citizens into believing that the way they live is ethical. They don't allow society to think otherwise, or that there is any other lifestyle better than their own. The government forces society to only have one thought, and it's that this is how life is and should be, and if any person thinks otherwise, they …show more content…
would be vaporized, or in other words disappear. This corresponds to America in which our government tries to promote a good image for itself. For example, after 9/11, Americans were submitted to many warnings that terrorists would attack again at any moment.
The government created the fear in society the same way Oceania's government created the image that their lifestyles' were untoppable. Just like
Oceania's citizens, Americans bought into the government's propoganda. This shows the resemblance of how our government and Oceania's relate in controlling their citizens thoughts.
What is this generation of society giving almost their full attention to? Social media. it consumes every aspect of our population's minds, the same way Oceania's totalitarian government controls theirs. Our government and other superiors use social media to spread and promote ideas to its' citizens. We are all so mindlessly sucked into social media that we all become the targetted victims of the government's tactics, in which we fall for. This resembles the way Oceania's government prevents thought crime. They promote how great the government is in protecting its' citizens, and to prove that point, they created two minutes hate which reveals those who have committed a crime, generating anger and stronger belief towards the government, from society. Our society is no different from Oceania's by the way both our government consumes our
attention.
Being watched every second of the day, everyday of your life seems a bit unethical and scary. In George Orwell's book, 1984, he proposes the idea of telescreens, in which the government, or "big brother" is constantly watching the citizens of Oceania to insure that no one was committing anything considered a crime. Is it really necessary for 24 hour government supervision to keep society under control? Our society somewhat clones that idea through all the advanced devices and systems that we have, such as smart tv's, phones, computers, or any other advanced technological devices. All those devices are created with inscriptions making it possible for anyone to hack and secretly watch your every move. Although modern day
"supervision" isn't to keep you in check, it resembles the idea of telescreens as you are constantly being watched.
Our society echos Oceania's society in many different ways. Telescreens and thought police are just a few examples of how the government controlled people's actions and thoughts.
Social media and advanced devices represent how it basically created robots by the way it brainwashes society. Our modern society has many elements that resemble the government and society of 1984.
