Sylvia Rivera, a well known activist and drag queen present at the Stonewall Inn spoke of the typical raids that gay bars faced,“The routine was that the cops get their payoff, they confiscate the liquor… A padlock would go on the door. What we did, back then, was disappear to a coffee shop or any place in the neighborhood for fifteen minutes. You come back, the Mafia was there cutting the padlock off, bringing in more liquor, and back to business as usual” (Rivera). On the night of June 28th, 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, and arrested 13. The raid in Stonewall was not new; the police raided Stonewall regularly, and patrons normally complied. Typically, the police would lineup the bar patrons and do a routine check to see what…

The next day, Mister Percy called all the servants down to alert us that a small sum of money had been stolen and to “warn” us that he’d teach us a lesson from stealing from him by selling the thief. I was terrified even though I hadn’t committed the crime that I had been accused of. I went to bed that night but couldn’t sleep with the thought in the back of my mind that my son could grow up to be sold down the river. I knew what I had to do. In Julia Alvarez's Yo!, Yolanda Garcia's family and friends get their chance to tell the truth about Yo. They express their feelings and their stories about Yo, including how she's always told lies, how she stole the plot for a story from a student, and how her college professor kept trying to prevent her from ruining her life and her talents. Alvarez tells Yolanda's story through other characters, while Yo is denied the privilege of defending herself. It is ironic because initially, the novel is based on Yolanda and how angry her loved ones are after she publishes a book that exposes personal things about each of them. In this novel, these very people are working to set the story straight and portray the true Yolanda Garcia that they know, a liar, a plagiarist, and a dropout.…

This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…

As a looked in my school library in which I teach I found numerous selections to choose from but didn’t find many Mexican folktales. I then searched on a database that my school librarian uses here at school to research and purchase books called Titlewave. As I was searching on this database I came across a couple of more selections that led me to research them a little more to find out about the author and origin of the stories and began looking on the Scholastic and Amazon for more information. I then remembered that I had a book bin that has a few books on Mexican folktales and found the story Borreguita and the Coyote in my collection of books. This book was a good fit for my audience and led me to research a little more to check for cultural…

An intern is someone who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment, making it similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students, but they can also be high school students or post graduate adults seeking skills for a new career. Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field, determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit. Internships provide employers with cheap or free labor for (typically) low-level tasks, and also the prospect of interns returning to the company after completing their education and requiring little or no training.…
