Examples Of Naturalized Epistemology

Epistemology is the study of knowledge, “without knowledge, scientific enquiry is meaningless and we can’t analyze the world around us.”(Martin.10). Philosopher W.V. Quine believed in using naturalized epistemology in place of regular epistemology. Regular epistemology is the validation of a belief whereas naturalized epistemology also wants validation of knowledge, but chooses to focus more on gathering data from the science involved. Quine believes that in order to distinguish the connection between a theory and observation is by using psychology in how people take the previous knowledge within them from what they view. When female theorists saw how sexism was occurring they came to realize that certain epistemology theories could help them find alternate ways of knowledge. One of the main goals in female epistemology was to show how having feminist ideas helped improve knowledge, not stall it and their inclusion in these theories could be beneficial. One of the main reasons why Quine’s naturalized epistemology as their form of philosophy was because it also introduced the idea of gender and knowledge. As told earlier in this paper naturalized epistemology is discovering through observation and collection instead of using a priori and does not include the idea of gender in its subtext. Therefore meaning ideas cannot be dismissed due to gender unlike other forms of epistemology since any knowledge gained is knowledge. Quine’s epistemology is one of my favorite theories however after learning about what feminist epistemology I tend to favor it a bit more.
