In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare the nocturnal setting of act II contributes the scenes overall mood or atmosphere. The overall all climax of scene is the assassination of Duncan king of Scotland. The overall mood and atmosphere the night of Duncan’s murder is very strange. Some events that happened was the dream that Banquo dreamed, also the things Fleance hears and what Lady Macbeth hears and finally the events that the old man tells Ross that happened that night the assassination happened.
Banquo’s dream foreshadows that are about to happen later in the scene. The dream also foreshadows the assassination of king Duncan. Scared Banquo tells Macbeth “I dreamn’t last night of three weird sisters. To you they have showed some truth”(II.1.20-21) . Banquo is telling Macbeth this because the witches have given them prophesy’s the only prophecy that has not been true is Macbeth becoming King of Scotland. Banquo tells Fleance how goes the night and Fleance replies “The moon is down, I have not heard the clock” (II.1.2). The moon being down does not happen usually at night. Therefore it sparks the events that are about to happen later in the act. Alarmed Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that after her husband was done killing Duncan she “...heard the owl scream and the crickets cry”(II.2.15-16).
