When I conduct observations, I notice that the angry young woman makes efforts to restrain her anger and does not shout at the man. If she were at home, she would not have been so restrained. The restaurant is a public space and interactions in restaurants are conditioned by manners and customs (Yan, 2005). When dining out, people need to act in accord with the environment. It is absolutely impolite to shout in public places. However, the restaurant is a casual rather than formal dining place and makes people relaxed and comfortable.
Observation 2:
Many girls and children like ordering desserts, such as chocolate cake and ice cream. These items are rich in sugar and fat and can cause to obesity and other diseases. People like to eat them because they give enormous pleasure and they are irresistible by nature (ABC News, 2012). Customers need to restrain their consumption of sugar and fat. Children should drink less carbonated beverage in order to avoid obesity in adulthood. …show more content…
Observation 3:
In the observation, I notice that a boy eats here with his father instead of mother.
DeVault (2008) says that most women still put family before their paid jobs and “take primary responsibility for housework and child care” (p. 240). I think the society and gender roles are changing. In many families, men take care of children and are responsible for the housework. More women attach more importance to their career and the inequity between women and men in food is decreasing.
Observation 4:
I can also relate my observations to food and delocalization. I notice that the menu contains kosher wine from Israel and Perrier water from France. These drinks are not local drinks and are imported from other countries. The delocalization of the items is caused by the “rise of increasingly complex, international food distribution networks” (Pelto & Pelto, 1983, p. 353). With advanced distribution network, people can eat almost any food from all over the
world.
