Examples Of Perseverance In Farewell To Manzanar
When reading Farewell to Manzanar and the two sources you can tell that there are many characteristics. But two that really stuck out to me are hope and perseverance. Without hope the characters in the book and the people in the sources that we read about would just give up and not persuit in their life. Also perseverance is important because in the camps they pushed through the rough times even though they were difficult. THESIS!!! When you look up the word hope on a website it would tell you that it means a feeling of expectation and desire for something to happen and this is how the japanese people felt every day after Pearl Harbor happened. When papa came back from the internment camp the looked skinny and didn’t care about life. But

    Life Experiences in Farewell to Manzanar

    The book, Farewell to Manzanar was the story of a young Japanese girl coming of age in the interment camp located in Owens Valley, California. Less than two months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which stated that the War Department had the right to declare which people were a threat to the country, and move them wherever they so pleased1. Since the West Coast had a large number of Japanese immigrants at the time, it was basically an act that authorized the government to remove Japanese residing on the West Coast away from their homes and put them in these interment camps. As harsh as it may sound, the interment camps were nothing like the famous Nazi interment camps of World War 2. The residents enjoyed relatively comfortable living situations compared to German interment camps, and lived fairly comfortable lives, when compared to the German camps. However, it was still rough, as many families were separated. Farewell to Manzanar is the story of one girl making the difficult transition to womanhood, at a difficult time, at a difficult location. Two of the main life lessons that Jeannie learned during her stay at Manzanar dealt with the issues of her identity of an American against her Japanese heritage, and also with school.…

    In the morning of December 7, 1941, Jeanne Wakatsuki has to say goodbye to her father’s sardine ship at San Pedro Harbor in California, but when the boat returns sardines are not all it brings back. News that Japanese soldiers have bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. As a result to this George, Jeanne’s father, burns all his Japanese belongings like the Japanese flag and his identity papers. Unfortunately George is still arrested by the FBI because of his nationality. Rigu, Jeanne’s mother, moves the family to a Japanese ghetto on Terminal Island, but hen moves to Boyle Heights in Los Angeles. In February 1942, President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 gives the military the authority to move things they see as a threat national security. People that are Japanese or are of Japanese descent in America can only expect their final destination. About a month later, the government tells the Wakatsuki family that they have to move in the desert 225 miles northeast of Los Angeles to a place called Manzanar Relocation Center. Arriving to Manzanar, the Japanese Americans find themselves forced to live in overcrowded living conditions, poorly prepared food, incomplete barracks, and dust that blows in every crack and knothole in the buildings. Since there is also not enough warm clothing to go around, many people become ill from immunizations and poorly conserved food. Not only that but they also have to face the indignity of the disgusting camp toilets, an offense that mainly affects Rigu. The family slowly begin to drift apart, starting by them not eating as a family anymore. Since being deserted by her family, Jeanne takes a sudden interest in the other people I the camp and even begins studying religious questions with a coupe of nuns. But when Jeanne has a sunstroke while imaging herself as a suffering saint, George instructs her to stop. About a year later George has returned from Fort Lincoln detention camp after being arrested.
