Throughout the story of Antigone, he spills his flaw all over the pages. Such acts are committed when Antigone confesses to burying her brother and argues with Creon that she had done no wrong. Similar to Creon, she was only trying to do the right moral thing, yet his pride holds him from sympathizing with her. Haimon, Creon’s son tries to be reasonable and tries talking him out of making the wrong decision. Even though Haimon is in love with Antigone, Creon refuses to back down on his decision to execute Antigone because then the people will look down upon him. Another example of his arrogant pride is when the prophet, Teiresias, comes to Creon to advise him and to consult about his decision and that it is going to bring about troubles. Antigone uses rhetorical questions, logos, and parenthesis to frame her argument. Antigone is more than willing to admit she has buried her brother's body. In the line, "Of course I did it. It wasn't Zeus, not in the least, who made this proclamation—not to me," Antigone both admits it, and shows us her thought through parenthesis—her thoughts being that it is stupid. She makes light of Creon's power because she is not afraid to admit what she has done. She believes that the power of the gods trumps the power of a mere mortal king. She communicates that she doesn't fear Creon's reprisal with the words, "Nor did I think your edict had such force that you, a mere mortal , could override the gods, the great unwritten, unshakable traditions." She uses logos to show that tradition is more important than the edict of a self-important idiot. She shows that she is not afraid to die for what she believes when she tells Creon, "Who on earth alive in the midst of so much grief as I, could fail to find his death a rich reward." She clearly believes in the integrity of her actions. She asks the question, full well knowing the answer. Antigone and Creon’s extremely conflicting motivations lead to the portrayal of Creon’s less desirable characteristics . Overall, this would lead to Creon unwillingness to compromise in the matter of Antigone and further develops the theme of how pride can be dangerous. Creon’s main goal is to seek justice for his kingdom and in doing so he deemed Polynices, Antigone’s brother, a traitor. Greek culture was expressed through many ways in the Hellenistic era. Many authors rose to fame for plays and stories. Although many know of Homer, author of the Odyssey, many most likely don’t know Sophocles. Sophocles was the author of the Theban trilogy, a collection of three plays that examined philosophical themes and Greek life. Antigone, the second play in the series, is based around a major conflict between Creon and Antigone over the burial of Polyneices.
