Reality and dreams are distinguished as separate in the minds of a human being. The definition of reality is the world or the state of things as they actually exist. The definition of dreams is the thoughts or actions of something that takes place in the subconscious mind. The short stories of “Lamb to the slaughter”, “The Pedestrian”, and a quote from Edgar Allan Poe are all examples of facing and escaping reality. “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl is the story of a mentally ill woman who murders her husband, with a solid lamb leg, for divorcing her. The mentally ill are known to not know the difference between what occurs in reality or their subconscious mind. Therefore, it leads them to become overwhelmed and carry out actions that are destructive. The woman by the name of Mary Maloney becomes so shocked at the news of her husband leaving her that her mind went into a dream like state that she could not wake up from. Poe is comparing the dreamworld to reality, and is declaring that reality is an illusion. When we are brought out of a dream rather quickly, our brain is still believing that we are still dreaming and has to make sure that we aren’t. That is why we pinch ourselves to feel pain to know that we aren’t hallucinating. Nightmares that are mixed with reality is called sleep paralysis. It causes the body to be fully in a paralysis state of sleep, while your vision is fully awake and is aware of the room around you. The brain is still unconscious and makes your dreaming become a reality in front of you.
