The novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini discusses the life of Amir and his quest for redemption. In his early childhood, Amir forms what appears to be a strong bond with Hassan, his servant; however, Amir betrays Hassan after only seven chapters of the story which begs the question: Why does Amir allow his friendship with Hassan to fail? After some analysis, a few possible reasons for this betrayal can be deduced, but what ultimately causes the destruction of this friendship is the imbalance of power. Similarly, brothers Salim and Jamal from The Slumdog Millionaire experience this uneven distribution of power as well. Salim holds power over Jamal simply because he is the older brother and that makes him feel more entitled to power. In…

Rarely has a book left me speechless like The Kite Runner has. It was so beautifully haunting that I simply could not tear my eyes away from reading it. The portrayal of the characters emotions were so raw, that it left me in tears or crying in denial. Nonetheless Hosseini has published Kite Runner as his first book, which I find immensely awe worthy. To deliver a masterpiece that leaves its readers too stupefied to not deliberate in life is what amazes me about kite runner. Furthermore, the book has provided such realistic insight on the political upheaval that has occurred in Afghanistan. Within its 371 pages it has provided me a peak into the different ethnic groups and its social hierarchy. Not only does The Kite Runner emanate a wonderfully crafted story it also educates its readers with each turn of a page. Despite having a rather heated political situation circulating around the world presently, I still believe that people should read it. With so many misconceptions regarding Muslim nations floating around and eventually being seen as the truth, a read like this properly clarifies the gray…

A voice is heard in the wilderness telling people to “repent:” “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turn to God” (3:8 Matthew). In this passage, Prophet John the Baptist is preparing people for redemption. If anyone returns from their evil ways, there will be a redemption and peace for the rest of their lives. These concept of redemption is seen in the movie, The Kite Runner, which takes place in the late 70s in Kabul, Afghanistan. Director Marc Forster tells the story of a friendship between Amir and Hassan, two young boys growing up in Kabul. Although, they are raised in the same household and shared the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grew up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan is the son of Amir's father's Hazara servant. As a protagonist, Amir has many complexes and struggles with the consequences of the…

One of the most prevalent themes in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is the search for redemption. Throughout the novel, the protagonist wanders down a figurative road, seeking redemption for the crimes of his past. As a young child, Amir seeks to redeem himself in his father’s eyes for “killing” his mother and for having “something missing” inside, in other words, not defending himself or others. After Hassan is raped, Amir seeks to atone for not standing up for his brother, and for further twisting the knife by sending Hassan away. In America, Amir becomes stagnant, burying his guilt and focusing on other aspects of his life. However, after receiving word from Rahim Khan that “there is a way to be good again,” Amir continues down the road…

However, their long travels to a safer place have either given them hope of survival or fear of dying. One man tells all about his own experience of hope and fear. Ahmed, who is from Syria, “survived the disaster but can’t find a reason for his life anymore”. He lost eight members of his family, when their boat sank after it left for Libya (“Ahmed’s Story, Syria,” 2013). From the tragedy he faced, the 67-year-old man remembered that horrible event with a lost of hope of living anymore. Ahmed recollects that “ ‘Agents’ helped them reach to Libya, and from there, according to the deal, Tunisian smugglers should have transported them to Malta. But they got into the hands of a gang of Somalis, Libyans and Tunisians instead” (“Ahmed’s Story, Syria,” 2013). Ahmed’’s story is similar to the situation faced by Amir and Baba, in the novel The Kite Runner, when they were stopped by soldiers . The father and son leave Kabul, Afghanistan for Pakistan due to Russian occupation in their hometown. During their journey, the fuel truck, that they use as an escape truck, is stopped by “two soldiers, one Afghan, the other a grinning Russian” (Hosseini K., 2003, p.114). The truck is opened and one of the soldiers sees a young woman. The soldier “wanted a half hour with the lady in the back of the truck” (Hosseini K., 2003, p.115). Nonetheless, the difference…

In the book The Kite Runner we see characters who do and accomplish great things for themselves and for others. But, we find out that they all this for redemption. It’s not to be a hero, it’s never been about doing the right thing for others, it’s about doing what will clear their mind and make themselves be at peace. Amir wouldn’t have gone back to Kabul to save Sohrab, if it weren't for the repulsive acts that Amir and Baba did to Hassan and Ali. None of this wouldn’t have even happen if Baba didn’t have an affair with Ali’s wife. Even if that were to still happen if Amir had not let Hassan be sexually assaulted by Assef, Hassan would have more than likely stayed with Baba and go to America where as staying in the middle east would have…
