NASA realized that they wouldn’t be able to keep learning new things about Mars unless they land on it so along with sending two new orbiters into the orbit of Mars they landed two landers on Mars. This is how we got the first image of the surface of Mars. Seventeen years after Viking NASA launched Mars Observer. The purpose of the mission was to study the surface and climate of Mars. The mission did’t end as planned. The Mars website states, “The mission ended with disappointment on August 22, 1993, when contact was lost with the spacecraft shortly before it was to enter orbit around Mars. Science instruments from Mars Observer are being reflown on two other orbiters, Mars Global Surveyor and 2001 Mars Odyssey” (www.mars.nasa.gov). As you can see from this statement NASA is and was upset that they lost contact with Mars Observer. After Mars Observer NASA was determined to have a successful mission to the orbit of Mars. Luckily, NASA’s next mission to the orbit of Mars was successful. Mars Global Surveyor was launched four years after Mars Observer and NASA recognized their mistakes because Mars Global Surveyor arrived in the orbit of Mars. Mars Global Surveyor made many discoveries including the discovery of a mineral found in water. This means that water was probably on Mars in the past and could potentially be found on Mars
