I was just thinking: what if we could hold up things that were different colors and choose instead of sameness of everyone seeing the same color”(Lowery, 98). This quote is said by Jonas and he is telling the giver that he wants every person in the community to see color and not have all the people to see only black and white while there is a variety of colors waiting to be chosen. In my opinion I would have said the same thing Jonas said because if I was the only one that could see color, I would want everyone else to see the beauty of color vision too. In chapter thirteen of the book, The Giver, Jonas realized that him and the Giver are the only two people in the community that have ever suffered pain. Throughout the chapter, Jonas would say, “They have never known pain. I then realized it made me feel desperately lonely” (Lowery 110). In this quote Jonas is feeling very isolated from his family and community. One would be very lonely if they were Jonas because they would have no one to talk to about what they were feeling or they could not explain to them because they would not know what they were feeling or going though. During chapter 13 of The Giver, Jonas is telling the giver that he wants to make decisions and not have everyone choose the same thing. Jonas said “If everything’s the same, when there aren’t any choose I want to wake up in the morning and decide things”(Lowery, 97). In the quote Jonas is saying that he wants to wake up in the morning and decide what he wants to do that day. Jonas is also saying that he does not want everything to be the same he wants all the people to make their own choices and not what other people think or do. If someone were to be in Jonas’s shoes they would also want other people to make their own decisions and not have everyone in the community make the same chooses as them. In conclusion, sameness in a person's life can define who they are and would cause people to all be the same. Jonas said many things he wanted to change about everyone being the same. He wanted the community to be different and not have everyone see the same, feel the same and to make the same decisions. I think the author's message was one that everyone could learn because many people want to be the same as other people but don't know how it would feel because your decisions can tell how you are as a person.
