The fastest way to go to hell or to heaven Why do you think that the Puritans were so scared when the preacher was giving his sermon? The use of pathos is convincing in “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” because how the preacher has no emotion in his sermon and used literary terms to scare the Puritans. First reason that the preacher has no emotion in his sermon is that he scares them to turn to God, and he is using literary terms to scare the Puritans. To illustrate the reason that the preacher has literary terms in his sermon is that he has to scare the puritans to turn back to God. “There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God;
there is Hell’s wide gaping mouth open; there is nothing between you and Hell but the air;…”. The reason why the preacher choose this quote is because the puritans can see the image in their heads and get terrified of what the preacher is preaching. Also preacher is using literary language to scare the puritans. In the other hand he used no emotion to make his sermon scarier because if you have no emotion that means that his voice in in one tone that make it scarier. “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: his wrath towards you burns like fire;” the quote that I have picked out is saying that you are the insect over the fire and God is the person that is holding you over the fire. He is saying that it is that easy to drop you into the blazing fire that signifies as Hell. All in all, the preacher is trying to get all of his puritans to go towards God and getting them to forgive their sins. He does that is from using literary terms and have no emotion. In conclusion the use of pathos is convincing in “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” because how the preacher has no emotion in his sermon and used literary terms to scare the Puritans.
