Examples Of Sleeplessness In Macbeth
One literary aspect that is present throughout the whole play, Macbeth, is the motif of sleeplessness. Sleep is mentioned many times throughout the play through many characters. The reason behind all of the insomnia is that the King has been murdered. There is political unrest as well as authentic unrest. The characters that it is most evident in is Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are plagued with sleeplessness due to their unspeakable act. On the night that Macbeth murders King Duncan, Macbeth thinks he hears a voice telling him that he’d never sleep again: “Methought I heard a voice cry “Sleep no more!, Macbeth does murder sleep”- the innocent sleep, Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care, The death of each day’s

    Macbeth loses his conscience after murdering King Duncan. Initially, Macbeth is consumed by fear as he is haunted by the guilt after killing Duncan. Knowing that it is morally wrong, Macbeth has committed a foul crime which he cannot be forgiven for – “To know my deed, ‘twere best not know myself’.     Macbeth carries the burden of his deeds on his shoulders, causing him to lose a terribly large amount of peace and rest in his life. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that he is losing sleep and he needs to stop worrying about the crime. As Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth, “You lack the season of all natures, sleep” (Shakespeare, 3.4.173). Sleep no longer comes easily to Macbeth because he is constantly replaying the horrendous crime in his head.
