Do you ever wonder what would it be like to not be noticed by anyone? In the book The Schwa Was Here, by Neal Shusterman, Calvin Schwa is not being noticed due to social invisibility. Social Invisibility is when someone isn’t seen by others in a social group. Ansty is a friend of his that is also not noticed but only in his family. Ansty is the middle child and went through the middle child syndrome. Middle child syndrome refers to the feelings a child in the middle of the birth order have about being unimportant compared to their siblings. According to the book and other sources it is clear that social invisibility is imposed by other. This is true because Calvin tried to stand out/be noticed but still don’t get the attention of others. This

    I believe the study and awareness of a person’s birth order in the family can be useful information during certain researches. Everyone has a birth type, it is not shocking that many people have developed and understood theories regarding birth order and personality. Firstborn is the experimental child. They are held to a higher standard. They do not like surprises. They are natural leaders. Once in an interview Dr. Leman said “There’s not a firstborn living that hasn’t had their mom or dad say to them, I don’t care what she did, you are the oldest.”(Walcutt, 2009) Second born children are completely differently than the oldest. Middle children are usually secretive and often call themselves the black sheep of the family. The youngest child is very manipulative, outgoing, a people person. Younger children are often risk takers in life and are always up for a challenge. Only children are almost the same as first borns. Dr. Leman said they are little adults by the age of seven. An only child have downfalls, they do not get alone with other children their age very well, they rather be around older children or an adult that they can cling to. They do very well in life, and they become very successful in the career that they chose. Your birth order can regulate the type of person you become. Birth order research has a large focus on relation to intelligence and educational achievement. Some research in this area show that birth order effects are inextricably related to family size. Your birth order can have an impact on the type of person you are, what type of companion you feel comfortable with and which type of job you will have.     As children continue to develop into the school years their view of themselves and others around them begins to change. During early childhood children are usually quite egocentric and often relate to the world around them through their own lens, as they do not easily think in hypothetical terms (Berger, 2008). This phenomenon was coined centration (Berger, 2008). Around the age of seven, early childhood egocentrism takes a shift. It is at this age when children begin to develop a more complex mind and can begin to think abstractly and hypothetically regarding events as well as the feelings and thoughts of others (Berger, 2008). The opinions of others do not affect young children nearly as much as they do seven to eleven year-olds. This is the age of judgment which children begin judging others, judging themselves, and contemplating how others are judging them (Berger, 2008). This phase can be extremely difficult for some children though it also can teach children to behave in a more socially conducive way (Berger, 2008). The complex social bonds and friendships often developed in middle childhood help pave the way for the further social and personal developments which will occur through adolescence (Berger, 2008). The mind of a teenager is much more complex their younger counterpart’s though it remain structurally similar (Artar, 2007). As early and middle childhood children have difficulty foreseeing the experiential view point of others, so do teenagers (Artar, 2007). Teenagers are quite concerned with how others perceive them so are younger children, though because the teenager can engage in formal operational thoughts, they are capable, and more likely, to be empathic toward others in general (Artar, 2007).
