She had rough life from the start as she told Schwartz. Her and her family grew up with nothing and it was hard on them because they did not have much to begin with. Her mother began drinking and things got worse for them. Her mother started drinking a lot and eventually started whopping her and her siblings. Things were so hard for their mother that she attempted to jump out the window, but Bertha was there to stop it (Schwartz 2003). Bertha talked about the time she got raped, and now that causes her not to be open with people. She met a guy who she though was good for her, but he turned out to be opposite. Her husband was doing boot camp and he eventually started drinking and it led to problems between them. He told her he was working two jobs and that is why he never come home. By him not coming home meant that there was no money coming in to provide for her and her kids. Bertha picked up a job, but her husband took her money from her. She explains to him that the money was to get the kids some food, but he was not hearing what she had to say because he felt like she was trying to tell him what to do. Her past had come back upon her when her husband began beating on her and their kids. Her husband constantly beat on her because he felt that she bought too much food and spend too much money. People who need food is out there trying to find a way to either bring in money for their family or bring in food for their families. There are many ways to help people end hunger, but these days people are not so concern with this issue. They advertise things on television, social media, and around places where people live, yet nothing has been done to make this change. The main policy I think that needs to be addressed is with the SNAP benefits. We have people who are out there being dishonest just to get more benefits than they deserve. We even have some people who get the benefits and just sell them to make money off it, which is sad because there are people who need those benefits. Since SNAP is a government assistant program, I think that the government should make this change to where stamps are only offered for those who really need it. By it being a government assistant program, I think the government should be responsible for making this
