I don’t feel there are positive aspects of stereotypes. Even in the rare cases of a “good” stereotype like “blondes are more fun”, to label someone before you’ve given them the chance to prove themselves is always a negative in my mind. While some people may not be offended by certain stereotypes, it is still unfair to give someone a label before gaining any knowledge of them personally.

What are the negative aspects of stereotypes?
The negative aspects are apparent in abundance. Some of the most obvious negative aspects are when minorities aren’t afforded the same opportunities that white Americans are given, due to racial stereotypes like “black people are lazy”. Stereotypes can also affect children. There is a common myth that some ignorant people believe in which gay parents will raise a gay child. Children can be very cruel at a young age and have stereotypes such as this passed down from their parents, which they then perpetuate against children of gay parents.

Part III

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words related to those stereotypes. Provide citations for all the sources you

What image do you see when you hear the word homeless? I use to think of words like dirty, lonely, and also needy. The true definition of homeless is without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Stereotyping is a common thought through our human minds, which means oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. I learned this summer on my mission trip to Madison, Wisconsin, that homeless people are not what we think they are.…

There are different kinds of people living around us. Not all of them stereotype others, but some of them do. May be I too stereotype at times. We are not born with a stereotypical mind. Our society and situation teach us stereotypes. Robert Heilbroner also writes in his essay about stereotyping people. Often stereotypical behavior harms Muslim people’s feelings. Also because of stereotypes black people are judged wrongly by their color, and females don’t get better jobs because of stereotyping. All of these stereotypical behaviors not only harm people’s feelings but also harm our society.…

Of course there’s the necessity for stereotypes to exist, but relying too much on stereotype will rather do more harm than good. That’s to say, its demerits far outweigh merits. As an American actor Peter Ustinov once said: “I imagine hell like this: Italian punctuality, German humor and English wine.” Indeed, thoughtless stereotypes defy people. To label somebody just by a few features is humiliating their personalities. In this case, those stereotypes become a kind of prejudice, an irresponsible idea you have before you get enough first-hand experiences to be able to draw some conclusions.…
