This book truly showed the horrors of this war, or any war for that matter and the amount of determination you must have just to survive. This war has displaced many Sudanese people throughout the country. Soldiers would destroy people and their homes and forcing many from the lands that they called home. They had nowhere to go or to run to, so they just ran to safety. That is the reason they are referred as “The Lost Boys.” This war is very horrific and has many casualties; many of which were innocent people just trying to live their life. It could also be said that these series of tribal wars displace the trust of the Sudanese people, let alone the Africans. These wars pit each countryman versus fellow countryman, serving…

Our circumstances are often not ours by choice, but how we respond to our circumstances is our choice. Deo did not choose to be born in Burundi nor did he choose to live in a place that would erupt in incredible violence. He did, however, choose to survive. He chose to run, hide in the forest, work for unfair wages, and chose to survive. It was also more than choice. It was a fight and it was not easy. “Moments were the only time he knew,” Kidder writes. “He spent nearly every moment worrying about the next. Six months felt like a minute, and moments when it felt like there was no time in front of him felt like an eternity.” (Kidder, 2009) Deo beheld horrific sights as he fled for his life. Dismembered bodies, an infant with a dead mother, and entire villages…

When the environment dramatically changes, humans are left with a false choice: accept or resist; only one of those options, acceptance, leads to survival. Life is evolutionarily programed for survival. One of the primary tools of survival is adaptation. If the situation one finds oneself in is irreparably difficult, dangerous, or deadly, adapting to the situation is the only way one can hope to survive.…

During the Civil War, over two million men and boys went to war, each with varied backgrounds and different stories to be told. While it is hard for many modern day Americans to fathom the hell these soldiers faced on a daily basis, it is possible to recreate illustrations of all the hardships faced through many documents recorded by the men with their first-person accounts of the battles. The lifestyle of a soldier in the Civil War consisted of multiple hardships on a daily basis which caused frequent issues in war, diminishing the number of troops on either side and causing the performance of the survivors to fall. Many of these problems are caused by extreme physical stress, many facing starvation due to malnourishment,…
