I am Kaitlyn Luepann and I am portraying the fairy attendants Peaseblossom, Bottom, Cobweb, and the “jester fairy” Puck From William Shakespeare’s play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I will be portraying all these characters as one character with characteristics of all four. The ways I am going to adapt the characters that I am portraying are for me to have a witty sense of humour, yet have common courtesy and manners, and have respectful body language and a humourous tone of voice because the three fairy attendants are very respectful, but Puck is humourous. How I adapt all of the fairies body language and tone of voice from the play to the modern day is to be a respectful Starbucks worker, who cracks jokes in a funny manner while customers…
Transcendentalism is the social movement that strongly emphasizes individual expression and creativity. The 1989 film, Dead Poet’s Society, is exemplary of transcendentalism and clearly shows the emergence of the movement in the United States. The film takes place in a all boys preparatory school in Vermont which highly values tradition and conformity. A new English teacher arrives with very unorthodox ways of teaching and looking at life. With his guidance, the boys at the preparatory school are able to stand up for what they truly believe in and break free from the pressures and expectations coming from their parents and society.…
Transcendentalism was a protest to the Industrial Revolution during the period from the 1830’s through the Civil War. Transcendentalists were concerned with the changes of society and culture due to the increase of “technology.” Transcendentalists wanted to preserve societies. Malala was shot in the head three times because she went to school. Malala got the Nobel Peace Prize. While some differences between Malala and Emerson are noticeable, the similarities are striking.…
In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare is telling the readers that, love needs no reason to exist; it defies logic and ignores all circumstances. This compelling message is very thoroughly communicated with the connection of the fantasy world and reality. The connection occurs in a forest, where each character of significance is, at one point, present. Here, the characters experience unforeseen events, as a result of the debatable use of magic, from those in power. However, despite the extreme unusualness and complications, the characters challenge the circumstances, and persist in loving the one they feel closest to. In this play, this situation is best represented by three significant relationships. The first exists between a lover and her hater, the next involves a young and rebellious couple, and the last concerns an ill-fated mechanical and the queen of the fairies.…
In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance”, he states that “For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure”. That was much of the country’s reaction when it came to reading about Chris McCandless, a man who set off into the woods to try and go against the grain of society who then succumbed to mother nature, in Jon Krakauer’s novel “Into the Wild”. Many of those readers would have considered Chris dumb and ignorant, but I see Chris as following his beliefs with those beliefs relating to Transcendentalism.…
Transcendentalism is an idealistic philosophical and spiritual movement that started in England in the 1830’s. This movement upheld the belief that divinity flows through nature and humanity, and that nature is one of the most spiritual things you can experience. One of the founding fathers of this beautiful “religion” was Ralph Waldo Emerson, and one of his most influential pieces supporting this movement is entitled “Nature”.…
A Midsummer Night Dream is a play written by the late William Shakespeare. This play is about a love triangle how one loves the other when the other does not like them until finally it all ends in a resolution, as they have a secret fairy world looking over at them, this play is almost like a mix between the fantasy world and the real! Bottom is one of the characters in this play, and in this play Bottom is a humorous and confident character, although being intelligent in other fields Bottom is not a very clever or educated man. Bottom and his fellow workmates are named the “rude mechanicals”, unsophisticated men but rather great tradesmen, working not with the mind but with the hands, though Bottom may be labeled a “rude mechanical” in many…
Chris made up his mind that he will “now walk into the wild.” (Krakauer 134). In other words, Chris is prepared to make his own decisions and to handle his own problems. He wants to prove to his family that he is no longer a child. He abandoned his family, friends, and his personal possessions to start a life where he will be more comfortable. Chris was looking forward to fulfilling his dreams before it was his time. Chris was “looking for more adventures and freedom than today’s society gives people.” (Krakauer 174). McCandless believes that society does not offer freedom or adventures that interests him. Chris McCandles then sets trail to create his own life where he can explore new things and being isolated. Chris wants to separate himself from society so he can focus on the things he wants to do. He abandons his family to start his own life. He wants to explore the world and follow his dreams. Chris dreams consisted of spending “the summer alone in a bush, living off the land. “He said it was something he’d wanted to do since he was little.” (Krakauer 159). Clearly, McCandless has been waiting for this moment since he was a young kid. He created the path that made his dreams come true. He is embracing himself by following his dreams. He did not anyone stop him from accomplishing his goals. Chris McCandles experiences represent the transcendental movement because he…
Many people who realized this drowned themselves in their own self down ant pitty that their innocent take on the transcendental moment demented into radicalism before this wane erupted into the limelight The transcendentalism movement prospered and shot up into relevance in the mid…
All things considered, the Transcendentalist Movement was a literary period that was quite influential because of the new perspectives it offered people to ponder upon. People were encouraged to think for themselves, instead of just accepting what society expected of…
Analysis in A Midsummer Night's Dream “O, I am out of breath in this fond chase!” (Act 2 vs.81)…
An earlier play entitled, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, by William Shakespeare, is a comedy outlining the destinies of two bothered couples. Shakespeare tactically demonstrates the love of two Athens individuals, Lysander and Hermia. The conflict is, Hermia’s father is against the marriage of the two and insists upon marriage with a man named Demetrius. However, the already complicated situation becomes more complex when Hermia discovers that Helena, a deep-rooted friend, is in love with Demetrius. My initial interest of the play arose during the introduction of this conflict.…
In Midsummer Night’s Dream There is a group of characters known as the Mechanics. These men are used in story mainly for comic relief and to further sub plots, or to tie together plots in one one event in the play. The mechanics are not just used for comic relief however, they also show powerful and inspiring messages through their wacky hijinks and comedic value. One such message is that even with the odds stacked against them a person can pull off their goal in a good manner, and earn respect from others that was previously thought impossible to attain. The mechanics show this as they try to put on a good play when none of them have acting or any theatre experience. They have problems with obtaining a set for their play, and have to resort to using an actor as a wall and the moon. In the woods Bottom's head gets turned into that of a donkey and then has a fairy queen fall in love with him only for his group of workers run out of the woods without finishing their practice. Even through all this adversity the group of laborers manage to make the noble lords and ladies happy with the play and even congratulate the Mechanics with payment. This proves that the Mechanics are not just bumbling incompetent fools that can't do anything except be a working class citizen that is used for comedy. I believe Shakespeare wrote the Mechanics to appear as…
Although Transcendentalism as a historical movement was limited in time from the mid 1830s to the late 1840s and in space to eastern Massachusetts, its ripples continue to spread through American culture. Beginning as a quarrel within the Unitarian church, Transcendentalism's questioning of established cultural forms, its urge to reintegrate spirit and matter, its desire to turn ideas into concrete action developed a momentum of its own, spreading from the spheres of religion and education to literature, philosophy, and social reform. While Transcendentalism's ambivalence about any communal effort that would compromise individual integrity prevented it from creating lasting institutions, it helped set the terms for being an intellectual in…
Dreams are used throughout A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare to strengthen points and reveal important aspects of both the play and the characters within. Often linking different periods, dreams are a prevalent and important aspect of the play that commonly reveal important plot characteristics. Therefore demanding attention by the reader and analyzer. Shakespeare is trying to show his readers the thin line between dreams and reality by foreshadowing future events through dreams, providing a link to reality, and revealing how reality reflects perspective and circumstance…
