Examples Of Transcendental Consequences Of Elka's Conflict
Ash 5 and stated, “Elka, your behavior is unacceptable, I am a Jehovah witness and I don’t bring my religion to the office. Paola is the office manager and she has already put up with a lot of your crap, have some respect! “You are all going to burn in the flames of hell, you devious sinners! Jesus knows I am here only because I need the money” Elka replied. She refused to turn off her music and went on a rampage of insults that everyone could listen, including the patients. At that point, I knew that the conflict with Elka, her religion and her personality have created an unhealthy work climate and that it represented a serious …show more content…
In this case the prelude to conflict consisted of the variables that made the conflict possible between Elka, my other co-workers, and I. These included, but were not limited to, Elka’s lack of self esteem, history of drug abuse, mental instability, and lack of education. On my part, they included my lack of managerial experience and my unfulfilled need to have a family in this country. The triggering event was the fact that decided to confront Elka as the office manager instead of as a friend, which awoke in her, feelings of apprehension, defensiveness, and betrayal. In contrast, I knew that joining a religious cult was the worst thing that could have happened to someone as vulnerable to external influences as her. The initiation of the conflict took place when I decided to put the interest of our company first and I stood up to what I thought it was professional and fair. Conversely, she saw my approach as a direct attack to her and her religious

While serving on the mission field over the last five years, I have found that when people feel threatened concerning their place and influence in the ministry, the anger and emotional intensity can escalate and can contribute to conflict becoming more complicated. Conflicts between Christians tend to be driven by a struggle between their head and their heart. In other words, Christians will commonly deal with conflict as if it is all about principle, when in reality the force driving the conflict is more likely the unresolved emotions…

The article “Managing conflict: Third-party interventions for managers” delineates the essential steps followed by a manager in effectively and efficiently managing organizational conflict and the various approaches adopted for its resolution. It identifies certain key variables to consider for each step of the decision process concerning intervention and presents guidelines for making appropriate choices. It also describes a variety of pitfalls that a manager must beware of when intervening as third party in managing conflict. Third-party intervention by the manager assumes greater significance in the light of increasing use of teams and participatory management approaches used by organizations wherein timely conflict resolution greatly impacts team performance. When a conflict arises between two individual disputants, appropriate third-party managerial intervention not only improves the working relationships of the disputants but also helps them develop their own conflict-management and problem-solving skills.…

Throughout this case study, one could make out all four conflict strategies and tactics (escalation, avoidance, maintenance, and reduction) that were displayed. Right in the beginning, John escalates the conflict by openly declaring his desire for the program lead position. Denise demonstrates avoidance tactics by trying to shut down the topic, shifting the decision back to Jane, and reminding others that she is the “senior member of this team (Shockley-Zalabak, 2009, pg 331).” Jane tried to adopt the tactic of maintenance when she encouraged all parties to voice their opinions. However, Jane was ultimately forced to use reduction tactics as the…

Conflict occurs when two or more people who, despite their first attempts at agreement, do not yet have an agreement or a course of action, usually because their values, perspectives and opinions are contradictory in nature. The credit and accounting departments are interdependent and share a common goal in the company but conflict arose because of the increase in sales caused the credit and accounting offices to become busier and this has caused conflict between Linda Sims, the accounting department manager and Jose Martinez, the manager of the sales department. Another issue that was causing conflict was whose department workload was more important and limited personnel resources in both the accounting and credit departments. Due to the increase of workload Ruth the administrative assistant for the credit department, is no longer available to make journal entries for the accounting department. When Sims approached Martinez to complain that she needed Ruth more he became defensive because Ruth was his employee who was doing Sims a favor by making the journal entries. Sims first initial conflict strategy was to force Martinez to turn over the services of his employee. He became defensive because he viewed Sims as controlling and trying to coerce him to turn over his employee to make journal entries for Martinez and that caused Sims to become resentful. If Sims would have attained the additional services of Ruth it would have become a win-lose situation for Martinez.…

Third, after you perceive conflict, how should you respond to it? When you respond to conflict, you should always respond in a lighter tone at first, but if that doesn’t work you need a new tactic. You need to address the problem, and create backup plans. For example,“Determine follow-up you will take to monitor actions. You may want to schedule a follow-up meeting in about two weeks to determine how the parties are doing”(Resolving Conflict Situations). If you have a conflict, you need to make sure it is gone and stays…

Lee Jay Berman Conflict happens. It is inevitable. It is going to happen whenever you have people with different expectations. This makes conflict management critical, whether avoiding arguments, disputes, lasting conflict or ultimately, litigation. Conflict can be avoided if steps are taken early in a discussion to diffuse anger and facilitate communication, and it can be resolved by applying a series of thoughtfully applied steps. As a full-time mediator and trainer in the fields of negotiation and conflict resolution, I see conflict in its final stages - full blown litigation or on the verge of it in pre-litigation mode. What I have learned in seeing these disputes for 10 years is that most of them could have been resolved in the earliest stages if the people involved applied some of the skills that mediators use to resolve conflict. And wouldn't it be great if companies could resolve these disputes before each side spent hundreds of thousands in litigation costs, before the employee was terminated or before the customer or working relationship was gone forever? Here are some tools for avoiding and resolving disputes in the early stages, before they become full-blown conflicts:…

“Effective conflict management should reflect the advice offered by Mary Parker Follett some sixty years ago. She argued that one ought not to conceive conflict as a wasteful outbreak of incompatibilities, but a normal process whereby socially valuable differences register themselves for the enrichment for all concerned.” (Treslan) Conflict should be handled differently, based on the situation and those who are involved.…

Although our mission is to treat each other with respect, workplace hostilities can erupt for various reasons under almost any circumstances. According to Lanier (n.d.), the term conflict refers to perceived incompatibilities resulting typically from some form of interference or opposition. Conflict management, then, is the employment of strategies to correct these perceived differences in a positive manner. Some of the conflicts that can erupt in my workplace are a result of uneven distribution of the workload, misunderstanding of information or communication breakdown, personality clashes, and misinterpretation of duties or policies.…

Individuals, and in this case mid-level managers must clearly articulate apprehensions, directly challenging superiors with the use of humility and positive communication skills. “Ethical communication forges collective understanding and the creation of meaning between individuals” (May, 2013, p.137). Prior to the negotiation of the second in charge, the situation was burdensome, and “negative emotions lead parties to escalate the conflict” (Lewicki, Saunders, Barry, 2011, p. 130). However, the fostering of communication and decision to approach the Company Commander created a constructive conflict and rekindled professional relationships. Additionally, the fact that the second officer in charge had an innovative solution (act as liaison with cultural support teams) exposed underlying organizational issues and determined what the true elements of the conflict were. On an individual basis, it showed maturity, empathetic understanding, and how an individual can contribute during a tumultuous time. By recognizing dysfunctional patterns of leadership and bringing them to the attention of leadership, the Company Commander understood the recommendations, and made a monumental shift from defensive to accommodating (Miller, 2014). The individuals took the correct course of action in this situation, as the encounter could have spiraled even more out of control. My final…

One of the more common ways that we tend to use to deal with potential conflict is appeal to the common goals of both the organization and its employees. Our managing director is not great at dealing with conflict and his preferred method is avoidance. However, since my induction in March of last year, I have encouraged him to deal with situations as and before they occur more. He can now see the benefits of this and works hard to deal with situations as or before they arise. If he senses unhappiness or potential conflict with regards to a situation, he now calls the person or persons in question in to his office to discuss. He encourages his employees to look at the bigger picture rather than the small one - the issue. By doing this and having them focus on the overall aim and objective of the company, he…

According to Pastor Tracy McConnell, in his book Conflict, Anger, and Forgiveness, there are a few key steps before confronting the conflict situation. First you have to identify yourself, “Are you the one in a conflict situation?,” “Are you asked to be a witness in the conflict resolution?,” or “Have you gone through the process and they have not admitted their fault?”. After that is established one must then move to identify the offenders in the conflict—they could be Christian, non-Christian, Atheists, etc. After you have identified the viewpoint of the other offender, next one should identify the offense or conflict. Once the conflict has been identified and clarified one should move on to deal with their anger.…
