Examples Of Transcendentalism In Dead Poets Society
The movie, Dead Poet Society, was a very well made movie. The film was about teenage boys that are inspired by their teacher, Mr. Keating, who makes them think for themselves, and find their own way in society. This film has many different ideals of transcendentalism including non-conformity, excelling, and open mindedness. One of the most prominent aspects of transcendentalism in Dead Poet Society is non-conformity. In “Self-reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, whom is a transcendentalist author, he converses about conformity. According to Emerson, conformity takes away a person's individualism. This quote from Emerson’s “Self Reliance” explains his thoughts on conformity, “Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members…. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs” (Emerson Self-Reliance). This quote reveals that according to Emerson, conforming is the worst thing about society because it takes …show more content…
In the words of Emerson “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds…. [you should] [s]peak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood?” This means that have your opinion and back it up, but do not be stubborn and not change your mind when the facts show that you are wrong. Todd Anderson is a great example of open-mindedness. He was in the Dead Poet Society even though he was shy. He accepted the ideals and the way they did things even though he was not sure at first. At the beginning of the movie Todd did not have a poem to give in front of class but by the end he was the strong and open one who stood up for Mr. Keating

In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance”, he states that “For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure”. That was much of the country’s reaction when it came to reading about Chris McCandless, a man who set off into the woods to try and go against the grain of society who then succumbed to mother nature, in Jon Krakauer’s novel “Into the Wild”. Many of those readers would have considered Chris dumb and ignorant, but I see Chris as following his beliefs with those beliefs relating to Transcendentalism.…

Transcendentalists are believed to go above and beyond and be independent. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau both stress that transcendentalism is all about individualism. According to Emerson, the main idea of transcendentalism is to withdraw from society: “To believe you own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart, is true for all men(that is genius” (185). Emerson focuses on following the heart. Similarly, Thoreau relied on civil disobedience. He wanted people to stand out and take charge: “For it matters not how small the beginning may seem to be: what is once well done is done forever” (193). He is saying that it takes one person to stand up…

Relying on one’s self, perceived through the eyes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, is seemingly the only way to show a man’s true genius and goodness to society. Transcendentalism, continually associated with Emerson and his essay “Self-reliance”, announces how the belief in one’s self and one’s ideals pushes away society’s conformity nature, and creates new ideas and questions. Throughout Emerson’s essay, he preaches for society to break away from traditional values, maintain open-minds, and embrace change without unnecessary contradiction. Emerson discusses all of these aspects by metaphorically comparing man’s freedom to understandable objects/situations, alluding to religion, and analyzing the relationship between man’s mind and nature.…

Transcendentalism was an American literary, political, and philosophical movement of the early nineteenth century which taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity. Since this movement, the ideas of transcendentalism have been reflected in literature, movies, and music. Emerson himself is a non-conformist and strongly believes that people need to do as they believe right and not as society tells them. In his essay “Self-Reliance” he writes “Whoso would be a man, must be a non-conformist. He who would rather gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness”(364) Huckleberry Finn is a non-conformist in everything he does. No one would ever even consider to run a way with and help a black man. But Huck does, he says to Jim…

There are Two different types of people in the world. Some people believe that the only way to get stuff done is by doing it yourself. They attempt to be completely independent because it is difficult for them to trust others. Other people are dependent on others to help them with everything they do. It all depends on their personality. I have learned over time that the ones who will succeed in life, are the ones who accept help from others.…

Transcendentalism, a literary movement influenced by the romantic era, encouraged the idea of finding and understanding oneself in order to understand the world. The Transcendentalist advocated soul searching in order to find ‘infinite knowledge’/truth about the universe and yourself, understanding the influences of education, and doing what you believe is right despite what those around you may think. The works of Thoreau (Walden and Civil Disobedience) and Emerson (The American Scholar and Self Reliance) are great examples of these practices. In his The American Scholar Emerson says, “The next great influence into the spirit of the scholar, is, the mind of the Past,- in whatever form, whether of literature, of art, of institutions, that…

Mr. Keating exemplified Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau very well with his transcendental teachings. He teaches his English class, which includes Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet, Charlie Dalton, Richard Cameron, Steve Meeks, etc., important lessons not for English class, but for life itself. One day, Mr. Keating brought the boys outside into the courtyard and made them walk in circles. This was to let the boys see who they really were by seeing that they all had different ways of stepping. The boys thought this lesson was silly but it really helped all of them see that they shouldn’t live life the way other people want them to, but instead, how they want to live themselves. The way Mr. Keating taught, brought the fun out in the boys. He said in class on day “To be great, is to be misunderstood”(Emerson186) which a quote by Ralph Emerson. The boys took this quote to heart. The boys needed someone at Welton Academy that wasn’t so strict and harsh and Mr. Keating was exactly that. The latin teacher McAllister was someone who opposed to Mr. Keating’s teachings. The first day of class for the boys in Mr. Keating’s…

Bill Beattie once said, “The aim of education should be to teach us how to think rather than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.” All too often, however, individual thoughts are crushed by the powerful weight of conformity. In the film Dead Poets Society, conformity exercises it’s influence and the results prove disastrous for some. For others, the effect of conformity compels them towards individual strength and the discovery of one’s true self.…
