Monte Carlo simulation can be done using a data table, as described at http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/excel-help/introduction-to-monte-carlo-simulationHA001111893.aspx but it is more easily done using an Excel add-in. There are many such add-ins available such as
@Risk, XLSim, RiskSolver, and GoldSim. A very simple to use add-in is available for free at www3.wabash.edu/econometrics/EconometricsBook/Basic%20Tools/ExcelAddIns/MCSim.htm where the following screen appears:
To use this add-in, download the file MCSim.xla and the installation instructions. Place the
MCSim.xla file into some convenient directory on your computer, one that is not likely to be deleted. In Excel install the add-in using the dialog box at File/Options/Add-ins shown below.
2
Select Excel Add-ins in the Manage drop-down list at the bottom and Click Go. The following dialog box appears:
3
Browse to find the add-in file MCSim.xla in the directory where you placed it. It will then show up in the list as shown above. Click the check box and then Click OK. The add-in will show up under Add-ins tab on the Ribbon.
The Installation instructions describe how to use the add-in. It’s fairly intuitive.
