The article called Does the Internet Make You Dumber by Nicholas Carr states that, “The Internet grants us easy access to unprecedented amounts of information. Growing body of scientific evidence suggest that the Net, with its constant distractions and interruptions, is also turning us into scattered and superficial thinkers” (1). Carr states in his article that the Internet affects people in a negative way, messing with their attention and memory. Carr also states how focused you are affects your personality, your memory, and your thoughts. One of the studies Carr looked at was conducted by a neuroscientist named Michael Merzenich. He said, “He was profoundly worried about the cognitive consequences of the constant distraction and interruptions the Internet bombards us with” (2).…
Scientist have proven that the internet causes damage to young children. By children turning to the internet for all activities such as games, learning, and pleasure. it’s socially not normal for kids to be on the internet all day. Nowadays with all new types of technology, people and teenagers in specific spend a lot of time on their screens. Excessive screen time is a major issue that needs to be monitored. It could really affect many people in many different ways. It could possibly even be dangerous if one uses it to much. Too much screen time has a negative affect socially, emotionally, and mentally for developing teenagers, because they won't develop the appropriate social skills, they can see pictures that can be emotionally detrimental for them, and it can be harmful for their health.…
Several different factors may influence this trend, but the recent explosion of social media may play an important role. Depression and social anxiety have both been associated with media usage and attentional control. How does predominant use of social media affect cognitive and social development in the youth and adolescent population? How does it affect psychosocial behavior and interpersonal relationships in adults? Could increased use of social media be a risk factor for developing depression and social anxiety? Are the amount of time spent or type of media used important factors in its influence on mental health? The evident shift in how people engage with media and online social platforms is important in understanding the relationship between media use and mental…
Social media affects our kid's feelings of loneliness, separating them from the real world and increasing their feelings of depression. For instance, social media spread news of engagement and breakups, job gain and losses, passing test or failing, or news of life or death. It's easy for our kids to become overwhelmed with all the news. Social media also leads our kids to social isolation, especially, when the kids spent most oft the time on social media and reduce the chances of actual social communication. In addition, social media affects family cohesion. Social media makes our kids independent from the parent's involvement in their social lives. Our kids see social media as one way of gaining freedom from over- involvement and instruction from their parents. Kids prefer to stay in their rooms sitting behind a phone or a computer screen, chatting, texting, playing or meeting new people rather than sitting with the family. Like a mother was complaining to me about her teenage son the other day. He was very fond of painting, but recently, he lost interest in his hobby, he spent most of his time on social media. She noticed that sitting behind the screen affected his eyes and body, and he miss the opportunity to develop his personality and learn social skills. He stay up late chatting with friends or uploading pictures on Facebook, and he barely wakes up in the morning. This is one mother and I'm sure there is many…
There is a high impact on health care cost due to chronic diseases. This is mainly due to the lowering of the mortality rate of chronic diseases. In the past there were less people living with these types of diseases or surviving them. There is also an increase in the diagnosis of these types of diseases. With the newer technologies they are able to diagnose more patients properly with these diseases as well as diagnose them early enough to treat them or cure them if possible. Here is some information I found concerning a couple of these chronic diseases:…
The overuse of technology effects people`s sleeping patterns and brain cycle. Studies have shown that for every four hours used of technology it will take at least an extra twenty minutes to fall asleep (The Effects of Too Much Screen Time). The light that is emitted from the screens of electronics interferes with the sleep cycle in the brain which can lead to insomnia. When people overuse technology it can increase their chances of getting mental health illnesses. The over stimulation of the brain that is caused by using too much technology can cause a person to develop anxiety, depression, and attention deficit/hyperactive disorder, also known as ADHD or increase the risk of developing these illnesses (Beurkens).…
Technology is a notion that will never end. New devices will be released and then advanced endlessly. It changes society by altering the environment in which individuals adapt. Technology now is a concept that individuals cannot survive without; an average person needs technology, to eat, to entertain, to cook, and to do many other daily functions. Let’s face it, individuals need technology to survive. But this is to an extent, for example a computer can be one of man’s best friends, it helps us write documents, it helps us obtain knowledge through the internet, such as searching Wikipedia, and it helps us entertain ourselves with games, movies, and music. But the computer can also have side effects to our behavior, and even to our appearance as Richard Restak, professor of neurology suggests in his article “Attention Deficit: The brain syndrome of Our Era.”. Some individuals get so entangled in this technology that their eating and sleeping habits change as do their behaviors. The Internet actually detracts from the communication abilities of society, especially the young. When individual’s communication skills are gradually lessened, they begin spending less time talking to their family, experiencing more daily stress, and feeling more lonely and depressed. In constructive teen years, lack of personal communication due to excessive Internet usage can have an overall negative effect on mental and physical health. Communication skills are critical for everyone, yet use of the Internet is undermining this development. The growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's society because it isolates individuals from reality, and hinders communication and understanding.…
Answer: In the article, “Internet Addiction”, Greg Beato’s main purpose or main idea is about how Internet affects people’s lives because of being addicted on the Internet. The author states that people that are addicted on the Internet turns out to be out of their minds and having some kind of disorder. He explains and gives examples specifically of people being addicted on the Internet. He also cites lots of evidence to support his thesis statement. The first evidence that Greg Beato put up to is about how many people are using Internet on their daily life basis. Greg Beato said, “The internet is a tool that many of us use on a day-to-day basis. We use it to communicate, interact socially, keep up-to-date with news, play games, took up information and provide us with an unending supply of inspiration and entertainment”. (135) He concludes that the percentage that people are using the internet is very high; Because of that high amount of percentage, many people drag themselves very much attached to the Web that affects them and leading them to have mental disorders. Another evidence that Greg Beato wrote about on his article is about those people who gone mad and had lost their minds. First, a student from Harvard lost his scholarship because of spending too much of his time playing video games. Second, a guy who stays at his computer for hours to play games, which developed a blood clots in his leg and had amputated. And lastly, an 18-year-old guy who chose to move out from his parents rather than to quit playing Internet games. Many teenagers had lost their social life because their attention is all about video and Internet games. They don’t have the time to interact to people because their focus is to stay at home and play all day. Greg Beato said, “In 2007, an Ohio teenager shot his…
Because the Internet tends to take up so much time, it starts to affect the behaviors of people mentally by making them anti-social. Their behaviors tend to change because they start to lose their social skills. For example, some people may use the Internet by picking on others, which is called cyber bullying. This behavior happens because people feel that it is easier and more humiliating if they bully someone over the Internet. The Internet makes people feel more comfortable with bullying because it’s anonymous and they don’t see the pain that they cause. Furthermore, it can make people suffer from discomfort because of its ability to feed their paranoia.…
The internet has become a safe haven for many teens and young adults to escape the realities in the real world. The world has become dependent on technology, computers, internet, video games etc In the PBS documentary Digital Nation by Douglas Rushkoff states that multitasking is one of the biggest problems children face today, many believe it is an attribute to learn but studies say it is less effective than focusing on an assignment one a time, people who multitask tend to take longer and make more mistakes. Working without distractions will help you get work done faster and better. Digital multitasking strains attention spans, technology makes it more difficult for children to learn. The documentary states that technology is bringing families farther apart , now instead of being at home with family you can now view and watch on your IPOD or cell phone. The video addiction in south Korea has become an issue for the children, it is seen as a health disorder and they have created internet rescue camps, video game addiction is equal or worst to a disease like alcoholism research of constant video game playing can shrink your capacity to think correctly, I myself believe multitasking is a big distraction, whenever I have to study or write a assignment or completing a task. I find myself taking…
Consequently, there have been people who commit suicide and the cause usually is social media. Along with providing information, the internet can also be used for entertainment. Videos can be watched on YouTube, and games can be played on different websites. With the invention of social media sites on the internet, people with internet access now have a means to collaborate and express themselves in new ways. With the ease of online communication, old friends can contact each other from different sides of the country, and new friends can also be made from around the world.
