Excise Tax On Sugar Sweetened Beverpines Case Study
I would like to thank the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, the ECCP, for inviting me to share my thought on the topic: “Analysis of the Health and Economic Implication of the Excise Tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages.”
This occasion, I may say, is somehow a relief from the heavy emotion, grief, and indignation that engulfed the whole nation these past few days or so because of disturbing events. I’m sure you know what I mean.
At the onset, I would like to point out that I support the Duterte administration. I’m a member of the majority bloc in the Senate. But I’m not a blind follower. I support the good programs but reject the actions that do not promote the interests of the people, especially the poor.
I oppose the proposed excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) because I

If the low-income earners will no longer buy SSBs because of their prohibitive prices, sari-sari stores will close down; ambulant vendors will stop selling; carinderias or canteens will stop operating. This is not a choice, but a result of the negative domino effects of the excise tax on SSBs. They have to do close shop, or they will eventually go bankrupt and lose everything including their small capitals.
No sweet effect on sugarcane farmers
If the proposed excise tax on SSBs is approved, sugarcane fields will lose their sweetness, so to speak. The demand for raw sugar will decline because manufacturers will slow down on producing consumer goods with sugar ingredient or its by-products. This will displace not only sugarcane farmers, but also workers of food manufacturing companies.
Anti-Poor Comprehensive Tax Reform Package
I believe that the comprehensive tax reform package agenda of President Dutertet has good intentions. In fact, one of the provisions of the TRAIN is to lower personal income taxes for low income-earners. This is a pro-poor

Upon the management’s request, I have been appointed as an analyst to express my opinion on the effects of proposed tax on sodas on its business and consumers. The supermarket chain is currently a monopoly and is comprised of seven stores altogether. The businesses have ample capacity and are currently charging the optimal price, quantity, and thus earning maximized revenue. However, the government is now considering a proposal to impose a 1% tax on soda sold in the supermarket chain. I have analyzed the effect of this 1% “fat” tax on consumers and its supermarkets. To better serve the management and help decide which tax schemes are better, I have included my analysis on this report. The information includes: current revenue maximizing price, output, and maximizing revenue; the effects on management and consumers’ satisfaction; and the alternative way for the supermarket chain to produce the same amount of tax revenues. I wish the management will consider all aspects and effects of the two tax schemes and carefully determine which scheme will benefit the consumers, supermarket chain, and government.…

$2.439 trillion will come from additional taxes. The most significant card played in this category gained $1.235 trillion alone. Although it is a daunting task and somewhat unpopular, reforming and simplifying the tax code would definitely be a game changer for our current economic position. With this policy, the tax code will be simplified down to three brackets. Rates would drop to between 8 to 12 percent for the lowest wage earners, 14 to 22 percent for the middle bracket, and 23 to 29 percent for the top bracket. Additionally, we will reduce loopholes and tax breaks, eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax, establish a territorial tax system for corporate taxes, and decrease corporate taxes from 35 to between 23 and 29 percent. Another significant, yet controversial, taxation would be to phase out the home mortgage interest deduction, which would effectively increase federal revenues by approximately $1.043 trillion. Next, $130 billion will be raised by taxing sugary beverages at one cent per ounce. Though some may argue that this additional sales tax would hurt the beverage industry and, by extension, the economy, there is strong evidence to the contrary. In general, the price elasticity of demand for sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is inelastic, between -0.8 and -1.0, according to Dr. Tatiana (Tania) Andreyeva, Director of Economic Initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University (Andreyeva et al., 2009). Therefore, the small price hike is unlikely to bring about any significant movement along the demand curve for SSBs and the tax will, in fact, increase federal revenues, with the added benefit of helping to combat obesity and, to a lesser extent, reduce health care expenditures. This budget also calls for increased taxes on carries. As it stands, private equity and hedge fund managers enjoy only a 15 percent tax rate on carried interest. By…

Consumers more than likely would think twice about purchasing sweetened beverages . Though it may Aid in the fight against obesity and create more job opportunities and educational opportunities, it would have also contributed to the loss of money from suppliers due to a drop in sales, possibly impacting small store owners and prompting larger markets to continually offer coupons or discounts,…

In terms of the economy, there has been an inconclusive debate about whether artificial sweeteners could be used in food and beverages as a sweetener material. The use of these sweeteners has some positive effects on the economy by increasing the production and creating new jobs. Additionally, they could reduce the obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay, which could decrease the health care cost. On the other hand, the consumption of artificial sweeteners may lead to negative implications for the economy, for instance, it may lead to some diseases, such as cancer. These diseases may increase the health care cost which has a negative effect on the economy. This section is going to investigate how artificial sweeteners tend to…

More and more young people are experiencing hypertension and childhood obesity, and because of which are seemingly becoming more prone to various diseases (Should Government Tax Sugary Drinks?). Many take a stand on the issue, as New York for example no longer allows the use of trans fats in their restaurants. Still the cost of unhealthy food has remained nearly the same, while the cost of a high yield diet has soared beyond that of the rate of inflation (Should Government Tax Sugary Drinks?). The idea has been presented that the government place a tax on unhealthy food, such as America’s favorite – soda pop! Various valid points have been made in relation to how this “sin” tax could help to benefit our financial deficit and better influence the people (A Tax That Invests in Our Health). Others object, saying that the tax is a form of discrimination, separating us about our assumed character and wellbeing (Does This Tax Make Me Look Fat?). Though the answer seems so clear to some at first how to go about imposing such taxes, it is important that the complexity of the situation is recognized to see if the tax would be effective enough to be worthwhile.…

Its time America stopped filling their bodies with all these sugars, and there’s no better place to start than NYC where millions of Americans visit each year. At least two thirds of American adults are overweight, and forty percent of New York’s public elementary are obese. With the mayor New York Michael Bloomberg’s law to ban all sugared beverages larger than 16 ounces in restaurants, mobile food carts, movie theaters, and sport stadiums it’s said to decrease the percentage of overweight or obese percentage. With this step in banning sugared beverages in New York City it will hopefully make people see the dangers and health risk of sugar and it will start to ban king size candies, some pastries, and even some sugary cereals.…

The U.S. Federal government as assisted sugar producers for over one hundred years with the use of tariffs. Twenty-six years ago the congress passed the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 by which they assisted the agricultural industry. The bill was aimed at helping most of the agricultural sector. I will be discussing the impacts it has had on sugar producers in particular. The the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 has helps farmers by placing a tariff on sugar import after a certain weight has been imported into the country. In addition, the Department of Agriculture also provides loans to sugar producers to make sure the can profit. In a free market American sugar producers would not be able to stay in business due to other nations significantly lower production costs. The loan can be paid back with cash if market prices are higher or they can just give the sugar to the government which will pay off the loan regardless of world market prices (About Sugarcane). This has led to sugar producer to become dependent on government assistance which in turn has taken away the incentive for sugar producer to grow other crops. Another consequence is the American consumer has historically paid more for sugar the rest of the…

Few of us are really aware of the dangers associated with all the numerous sugar substitutes available in the supermarkets. More common awareness is using “artificial sweeteners” to satisfy our “sweet” taste buds and at the same time reducing our caloric intake. But, how beneficial are these, if they are doing more harm than good to our health? Could these be hazardous to one’s health? If known to be harmful to the precious human body, would the choice still be to consume? Artificial sweeteners have been highly debated and scrutinized for decades. Realistically, who doesn’t like the taste of sugar? The majority of people use artificial sweeteners to reduce our calorie consumption; although, these are also used for the control of diabetes and other health issues. The thought of keeping ourselves at a healthy weight and eating our cake too, is more than appealing! Unfortunately, these sweeteners are not all they are cracked up to be. As a person working in the pharmaceutical world and around health education, I strongly believe the health risk associated with consuming artificial sweeteners far outweighs the alternative, consuming a smaller portion of natural sugars.…
