There are many problems around the world concerning food safety for human consumption. This paper will cover who is responsible for food safety and how we can improve food safety by diligently following agency guidelines and putting into place procedures to keep the manufactures in compliance with their products. Management has the ability to qualify excellent suppliers with good reputations in the food industry. They need to follow good manufacturing practices (GMP’s), managed and train employees on SOI’s. Management must also take responsibility for the final food product.
When it comes to poor quality in the food production, it is up to the management team to provide the board with information that will help them make appropriate decisions to fix the problem.
Chinese Food Filler Problem
On May 30th different media outlets reported that Chinese Shuanghui International Holding Ltd. spent more than seven billion dollars to purchase the biggest American pork company Smithfield Food Inc. Food safety, a popular topic was brought back to the center of the stage again. Food safety has been always a big problem in China. Filler is one of the most popular methods that is used in the Chinese food supply. As consumers, we cannot figure out whether or not the product we bought is or is not made with filler, even though we can read the ingredients on products. Chinese food inspectors do not always maintain rigid standards and are open to bribes. In early 2008, six infants died and about 300,000 who fell ill from milk powder, which includes melamine, from Sanlu, China’s biggest dairy product company. In Feb. 2009, Shuanghui International Holding Ltd, sold tainted meat which poisoned seventy people in Guangzhou. However, later on, the chair of Sanlu was executed by shooting, and the chair of Shuanghui gave a public apology. However, Filler is still used all over the food industry, in both human and pet food.
