The horror of the Holocaust is known by almost everyone in the world. We know of Hitler, the German army, however what tends to go un-noticed or forgotten are other countries’ implications. This is what Tatiana de Rosnay’s book Sarah’s Key brings up throughout its pages. Utilizing a fictional character set in the historic time of 1942 during the round-ups of the Holocaust, the reader is able to get a better sense of the great amount of pain the French Jewish people of France faced. Including these historically based chapters that were woven within another interlinking plot helps the reader learn at the same pace as the book’s main character Julia. The reader begins to rely on Julia for emotional support when learning information of such a shocking historical moment. The book offers the reader a way to learn and remember a forgotten past.…

    Example Of Heroism Essay

    • 712 Words
    • 3 Pages

The stereotypical hero is brave, strong, nearly flawless, a lifesaver, and usually at least semi-intelligent. This archetype simply does not often appear in real life, unlike my definition of a hero – someone who tries to be the best person they possibly can be. I believe heroism is defined or reached by being gutsy, devoted, and benevolent, never being unfair, cruel or inhumane, and standing up for what you believe in.…

Despite Carrie’s misfortune, she wears a smile every day and hands out hugs like candy. After having my first experiences with Carrie, I decided to expand my horizons and help others outside of my school. I began volunteering at a program called FUSE (Families United for Support and Encouragement). They sponsor a plethora of events including an adaptive swim program, which is where I spend my time in the fall. I also joined a program at my church, SonRise, which offers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to build a Christian community. These programs have taught me how to be better a person and have truly enriched my…

As the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield appears to attribute his social condition to circumstances beyond his control. Critics give praise to the character of Holden Caulfield as a non-conformist rebel that is unwilling to compromise in the face of the harsh realities of society. However, this view does not seem to hold true to the circumstances taking place. Holden's detachment from his life is almost voyeuristic in nature, and he is unwilling to take responsibility for his actions, or lack there of, on any meaningful level. Holden Caulfield is a disaffected youth whose cowardice, sexual impotency, and inability to reconcile the perceived perversions of society with his own childish, idealistic morals lead to his eventual mental break-down. Little sympathy can be had for Holden when the only active participation his takes in his own life is his own self-destruction.…

She was determined in her dark times to see the light. “‘Once I found out my leg was gone, I felt like it was the end of the world. This was 11 years ago, so at that time, being an adaptive athlete wasn’t well known. I thought that my life was over,” (Constantinesco 5). But it wasn’t because she wouldn't let it be the end. “‘After being transferred to San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital’s rehabilitation program for an intense month of inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, Burt finally got cleared to return to her San Diego area home,” (Constantinesco 7). Burt and I relate in ways like she lost a limb, a part of her life and I lost a little sister, just starting hers. Even though I didn’t know her that long, that’s a part of life that’s not there anymore. A piece of me gone. Like Danielle. She lost a leg! A piece of her that’ll never come back and it gets rough when you’re already down or if you’re at the peak of your life. Tests come at all times in our lives and it's up to us to walk out of that storm stronger than when we walked in.…

Alicia is a 23 year Caucasian woman that was born without any disabilities. For most of her life she was a temporarily able-bodied person, just like me, with the mentality that nothing tragic could happen to her. She went on to explain how and when her mentality changed. She began, “It was a beautiful spring day….May 23, 2007. We were riding to his parents’ house for a family dinner when it happened….The driver did not stop.” I was completely engaged at this point. It was tragic. A truck driver was coming off of the freeway too fast and tried to beat the traffic light at the top of the ramp. He went through the light and smashed right into the side…
