Are Teens Addicted To Cellphones?

With the introduction of smartphones and them being made available to almost anyone in a first world country communication has arguably become more efficient than ever nowadays. Cell phones are now not only for quick and easy communication, also they are ideal for looking up facts, and contacting one another, but do the positives outweigh the negatives? Today, cell phones are a major part of society it is common to see someone texting or making a quick phone call on the high-tech devices. Many find these to be extremely convenient resources for everyday life, but most people do not stop to consider the negative effects that cell phones could have on one’s mental health and daily habits. Many teenagers have become more and more attached to technology resulting in what some may see as an addiction.

With improved technology in cellphones location based programs such as Wi-Fi logins and other social networking sites allow you to see what friends are in an area near you so you can meet up. This can prove useful in some situations however the dangers of this are your privacy is at risk as mobile phone companies have access to all information in your phone and if a teen were to have a stalker the stalker could just track their phone. Location tracking can also be a huge tool for cyber bullies as they could use location tracking just to find their target. While location tracking has its good intentions they can be abused and turn into a major form of privacy invasion. The social aspects of teens have changed drastically for instance when a person is always on their phone he or she pays little attention to the things around them such as people. As a result of this interaction in families has declined at an alarming rate. Teens spend less time with their families and more time with their cellphones. This has resulted in less unity within not just families but also the people around them. The next generation is going to have a hard time connecting with other people on a social level because cellphones have made social interaction very impersonal. Cellphones are thought to have a terrible effect on teen attention span. According to parent Dina Correia “She said although cellphones were a useful tool, she felt the texting world had become “a beast that is out of control” Jesse Moniz. For instance it is common to see teens constantly glancing down at their cellphones not paying attention to anything or being in groups of their peers but still acting as if they are alone texting on their cellphones. This addiction can also be witnessed through classrooms or when students are meant to be studying as cellphones appear to be used quite frequently. This can result in them being to be hugely detrimental to teens and their learning as this distraction can turn into a bad habit. The worst thing is not only does using a cellphone distract the cellphone user it can also distract those around them.

A reason why it is so easy for teens to be addicted to cellphones is technology seems to be continuously expanding meaning newer more improved versions of what they have are constantly being released after a few months. Meaning that what they have soon becomes outdated. Various updates that take place over a year will have teens becoming more and more immersed in their cellphones meaning they become even more attached to their cellphones. It appears as teens will grow up and eventually become slaves to technology. With the improved accessibility phones have nowadays teens have access to almost anything now days such as online shopping, searching for facts and statistics, social media, and instant messaging. This leaves them little or no reason to partake in physical activity or physical social interaction. Some teens would rather stay by themselves behind a phone screen in their own homes than leave their house as they have everything they need at their fingertips in the form of a phone. Teens nowadays have become known for being the largest materialistic generation in history. Many teens are very self -conscious, and lack self-esteem as a result of this they to improve their status among their peers by getting their hands on new technology or the “cool” brand names. Their self-worth is highly driven by what technology they possess such as cellphones. This mentality may lead to teens struggling with financial responsibilities in the future and then later on suffering from depression. With the growth of a sense of materialism among the youth of today it is further being enhanced by the growing level of accessibility of technology as well as the improved accessibility.

I myself being a teen can unequivocally say that teenagers on the most part are addicted to cellphones during the writing of this essay I have picked up my phone to answer a text more than 7 times and am guilty of what is mentioned in paragraph three which is being occupied on my phone while in the process of my peers. Phones give us as teens almost everything we need in terms of boost in our self-esteem and attention. They provide a distraction from the stresses of life and are often easy to conceal in a classroom. I do think that they have become a major addiction that will affect generations socially and have gotten out of control.

People are using their cellphones because cell phones provide immediate access, regardless of time and location, eliminate the need to find a landline phone, and make them look good.
